Really great points, Kate. I'm especially keen on point #2 - having a systemized, regular way to interact with clients inbetween calls. This is ginormous. Of course, we use JournalEngine software to do that, and it's a powerful, professional way to accomplish this point. But even if you don't use JE, you should still do it. interacting inbetween calls makes clients feel like they are the center of your universe. When they feel this way, they want more, and are much more likely to extend their contract.

One other point to add - in our coaching business, we find it's a heck of a lot easier to create a new and unique coaching program than to find a new client. So invest creative energy coming up with new coaching programs, and then hand pick past clients to join the new group. I'd say we convert about 50% of the past clients we talk to, who feel honored that we've selected them. It's a powerful strategy for us.

Hi Kate,

What a fantastic article!

The theme of my blog is "Can money buy Happiness?" Sure it can, if you know how. Most Americans commit emotional suicide trying to find happiness by working too hard and not enjoying any thing in life. Of course none of them would acknowledge it until it is too late.

I know what I am talking about from my personal experience.

I've found that calling on your network is key. I have amazing contacts, and struggle with comfort level of calling on them and asking for help. What good is your network if you don't lvergae it? Like most hurdles, we are often in our own way.

Speaking engagements with groups of your "ideal client" types is great exposure - I'm planning to speak monthly and offer free sample phone sessions to participants (sign-up) as a follow-up gift.

Offer free coaching sample sessions (30 min) at conferences with your target market.

What a lovely reminder. Lately I have been wondering how I could impact the world more than I have been doing. Here I am the one that keeps reminding people that it is "The little things" that make a big difference. Your blog brought it home to me: Practice doing the little things to help make another person's day better.

Going out the door and keeping my eyes open about how I can enhance someone's day.
