Comment on MAKING A DIFFERENCE – REAL LEARNING by Kathy

Congratulations to you, Dr. Murgatroyd! Taking what was a challenge at the time and creating something so wonderful and inspiring for a lifetime! It must be so very satisfying and heartwarming to be able to see the fruits of your labours.

So many people turn the other way when they see a child struggling. I don't believe the schools are set up to deal with teaching children properly. There are some that take a little longer to absorb something and others that absorb in a heartbeat. And yet they are all combined in one room, expected to learn at a set pace to make the institution look good. I'm guessing by the names, this didn't take place in Canada or maybe just not in Calgary. I am not sure the teachers would be able to just teach at their own pace, at the child's pace, in the current system. Every parent has their own idea of how their child should be treated or how the child should learn, etc etc. The expectations of the teachers are enormous. Many, by the time the child reach the higher grades, have simply given up. "It's the child's responsibility to learn", the parent is told. "If they want to learn, they will. It's not our fault if they are falling behind". And so the individual talents of the child fall to the side and the child simply moves along through the shuffle. Maybe it is the expectations. Maybe our society is so driven that nothing short of absolute perfection is not even considered, let alone tolerated. Either way, it's more disfunctional than functional, in my belief.

Your article brought tears to my eyes. I can only imagine the individual children in your class. Probably already used to a world giving up on them. You gaining their trust and inspiring them to believe in themselves before the actual learning even begins. Thank you for being such a wonderful person and for having the patience and caring to be so inspiring to these children/adults!

Great post! Something I have really been thinking about lately is something a friend mentioned to me. They said, we never look back on our life and say, "oh, I wish I worked more," or "I wish I spent more time alone." No, instead we look back and say "I wish I spent more time with them" or "I wish I talked to so and so." Life is about relationships and those we meet along the way. So many times we get caught up in the lifestyle, but we should step out of our comfort zones and we gain so many more relationships through that.

Thanks for sharing!

LOL...yes.. I had noticed that the sex part was still lacking.. But then, I knew it would be...! As someone who is always burning not just one candle at both ends, but 2 or even 3, I knew the sex part would not happen!! However, I do hope by now the magic deed has been done!!

I start preparing for Christmas at the beginning of December. Doing all that baking, shopping, cards,.. don't have the potty training part anymore, thankfully.. Sex in our house is definately off bounds until at least New Years!! LOL

Funny article!! I enjoyed reading this!!

It would be nice if the government actually gave the people a vote on huge issues like these like they did in Oregon. That would be true democracy. Instead, the governments we have do what they please and then lay blame elsewhere or make lame excuses that pass because people just don't know all of the facts. Very good article. Although we are in Alberta...and the people don't seem to have a problem with the flat tax rate that only benefits the elite and wealthy. Remember this people. The more we ignore the people at the bottom the more crime we will have. The USA is a good example. Poorer people will turn to crime because of lack of options to put food on the table.
