Agreed with Adrian. Whenever possible, assign a class and style it by it's class. I will sometimes create a .center class and then I can use it, but I try and assign ID's to most layout elements when possible.

<code>
.center {text-align:center}

Leon has clearly got the cleanest solution.
All your helper methods are available in your views already, but if you need to declare some methods in the controller as helper_methods, this works beautifully.

Hello all,
I am new to to use cruise control.rb.I have some queries.
1: While running the command i am getting error in Migration which i saw in .cruise/projects/name/build.log
How can i fix this problem?

2:Does CC use test database or production since i am getting error on config/environments/production.rb

3:Now i am using rspec for testing.How can set the path so that as soon as i type command for starting cruise i.e. ./cruise start then it should automatically fetch the testcases from Rspec.
What i have done is in cruise_config.rb i had done following:
case project.test
    when 'MyProject.Quick' then project.rake_task = 'spec:controllers'
   # when 'MyProject.BigBertha' then project.rake_task = 'cruise:all_tests'
    else raise "Don't know what to build for project #{project.test.inspect}"
  end
Please correct me if i am wrong?

Chuck,

I setup CC for a RoR project last night and had issues with email as well. I discovered what I think is a bug in the CC.rb manual in terms of modifying the site_config.rb file.

Looking at the source code CruiseControl.rb it seemed that it was looking for site_config.rb in the [cruise_data] directory, not [cruise] (the project directory). I copied the file to [cruise_data] and voila, it worked.

I'm going to submit a bug report regarding the faulty instructions.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. You need to update your frozen rails from the git repository. Or you can get the rails 3.0 pre installation which is now available.

I'm using the latest version (1.4.0). I'm running ruby version ruby 1.8.7 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 72) on Ubuntu. I'm not sure if I had to modify the code for it or not. (I'm pretty fearless with that when I start getting errors.) Let me know if you need some help.

I did not really try using since I read it on this page http://cruisecontrolrb.thoughtworks.com/documentation/getting_started that cruise controlrb's supports only specific to ruby 1.8.6 in the prerequisites section

Now since you have got it working , I will give a try to it ..! ...Can you tell me the version of cruisecontrolrb that you are running with ruby 1.8.7?

I'm using cruisecontrol on an ubuntu 9.04 server with Ruby 1.8.7 on it without problems. I don't recall having any problems getting it working. Are you getting a specific error when you try?

That's for pointing that out. It's very true. You wind up rewriting sections of code without the safely net of knowing whether you broke something unless you want to wait 3 hours for the old test suite to run again. That's not always practical. Much better to do it right the first time.

I've been working with http://teachmetocode.com to record some of these videos. Those videos are hosted on that sites account with their security settings.

I do intend to release some videos of myself doing code katas (ala <a href="http://charlesmaxwood.com/8-lessons-from-corey-haines-performance-kata/" rel="nofollow">Corey Haines</a>) which will be embeddable and probably downloadable. I appreciate the feedback and will do my best to provide top quality content for both you and them. I really think they have a terrific group of experts and a provide a great service to the community.

I think than just unlock the videos on Vimeo for watching on it or just release the download (Vimeo also has this feature), will be give the users all necessary. I don't understand why release for the others a video and lock your visualization in Vimeo.

Thanks for the feedback on the screencast. It was my first, so I'm still working out the kinks. Do you know anyone who is really good with Camtasia? I'm trying to figure out the ins and outs of recording with it.

I'm probably going to record the audio with audacity from now on. It should help with the little bit of white noise on the audio and I can amplify it a little. I had the sound turned up all of the way, which tells me that I need to figure out how to work around the low volume.

If you have any other suggestions, I'd appreciate them as I'm still kind of new to this.

Good effort. Liked the music at the beginning.

Few things for next time:
1) The quality of the screencast goes down considerably when I maximise the player. You should look into that for sure.

2) Speak up a bit. I can hear you but you can be a little bit louder.

Apart from that its quality.

I think the real problem here is that many developers do not realize the difference between module test and unit test. If youre relying on something to be there e.g. a file, a database connection, its a module test. If youre testing in isolation its a unit test.

I originally started backporting Rails 3 seeds before 2.3.4 was released.

http://github.com/n3bulous/seed4rails2/

The main benefits are handling all your seed data as YAML and being able to order them by just using a default seed.rb file, like:

http://github.com/n3bulous/seed4rails2/blob/master/seed4r2.rb

Still needs some improvements, but I've been short on time and its low on the priority list. #1 pending change is a rake task to generate a timestamped yaml file. #2 task is migrating my local day-job changes to the github version.

I was rather let down with the implementation of the seeding. If you run the seeding multiple times, it will create the data multiple times, unless you write the code to do otherwise. I don't like this approach personally. I recommend you check out seed_fu, it's what I've been using for quite a while and will continue to use until Rails implements a larger featureset.

Thanks for the feedback Charles, I wish we did get more feedback from our listeners. I think you hit the nail on the head though.

I think there are two different types of listeners out there:

1. Those that don't have a lot of time and just want a quick podcast with focused content. This is the format I cater to with Ruby5. Think NPR news meets the Ruby world.

2. Those who have the time to listen to something a little more talky, and enjoy the banter which Jason and Dan do so well (better then I ever could) listen to Rails Envy.

The Ruby community needs more media like this (in my opinion), so it's kinda cool that Jason and I figured out a way to create more. =)

FYI, we rarely cut stories. We try to find the 5-7 most interesting and educational stories for a Ruby/Rails developer.

This is a great exercise, thanks for sharing!

When I was in a presentation by Kevlin Henney at NDC he mentioned something about should that made a lot of sense to me: "Should indicates that it may actually not do it". Like "I should really do the dishes but I won't".

Rack::Warden authenticates at the Rack level. It's a little rough, not many examples, but it works above Rails and/or Sinatra, so you can use one authentication system for all:

Great article! It's nice to be able to see all of these side by side. I'm still loving authlogic, but the metal way of doing it is very cool. I may have to update my app that still uses basic auth.

Interesting. Maybe you and Gregg can comment on what will be different between the two podcasts. He's kind of hinted that Rails Envy will be longer and have more discussion on it. Not to mention to cool sound effects. Is that about the gist of it? or is there a more substantive difference outside of the length and constraints that come with it?

Glad you like the new cast Charles.

I feel you on some of your comments here. The duration of the cast definitely feels shorter then I'm used to, and I think I had to cut two stories from the cast to keep it under 5. eer.. under 6 rather.

Glad someone likes the campy sound effects. hehe... one person told me I used too many sound effects in the first Ruby5. You can't make everyone happy I guess.

IMHO the Ruby community needs a news cast, and from what I've seen around the net those are usually about 5 minutes. I can take 5 minutes of news... more and I get board.

Hopefully this leaves the door more open to someone (maybe someone like you) to do a more campy, more dialogue, more lengthy and talky podcast. =)

I encouraged Jason to do this cast.. maybe you two should team up.. Just a thought.

add_impression isn't necessary, as ActiveRecord's association proxies provide us with some methods like:
<code>
some_record.impressions.create :visitor=>visitor
</code>
- no need to pass :impressionable=>self

Of course you can wrap this in a custom method for abstraction:
<code>
def impression( visitor )
  self.impressions.create :visitor=>visitor
end
</code>

But I recommend against creating such abstractions until it's necessary - there's a good chance ActiveRecord associations will do. You can even extend them, take a look at "association extensions":
http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Associations/ClassMethods.html

You don't need the instance eval. You can simply do base.has_many

I tend to end up doing this every time I use a polymorphic relationship

Good tip, but doesn't work cross browser I'm afraid. You need to do the following:

body {
  text-align: center;
}
.wrapper {
  width: 900px;
  margin: 0 auto;
  text-align: left;
}

Hope this helps :-)

The best way I can think of explaining immediate values is numerical values. For example 1 in Ruby is of class Fixnum. If you have a = 1 and b = a, then a and b both refer to the immediate value of 1. If you change it so that a = 2, b still equals 1 because it refers to the immediate value 1. If you have a and b both strings a = "person" and b = a. They both reference the same object. a.reverse! changes a's stored value to "nosrep". If you access b, it also contains "nosrep". With objects of immediate value, you can only change the reference. You cannot change their value.

With symbols, they are like Fixnum's. You can refer to them in their immediate and immutable value, but you can't change the Symbol. It's like using 1. You can change your variables so they refer to 2, but then you've changed the reference, not the value itself. Incidentally, you can call to_i on a Symbol to convert it to it's integer equivalent, but the integer doesn't really actually tell you anything useful about the symbol.

"In this example, you still get the Person object back identifying Nikki, but in this case we don’t have the overhead of an object in the key"
Isn't (almost) everything in Ruby an Object? You'll still have an object in the key (an instance of Symbol).
I don't understand the meaning of "immediate value". Like primitives in Java?

We followed the same process starting with something dirty and ending up on something clean. I think you might even remove the call to 'polymorphic_path'.

<code>link_to @post.owner.name, @post.owner</code> should work as well. :)

Just as a note, you can use the "should_change" matcher on your first test to make it a bit more succinct:

lambda {
  ZipCode.import_from_csv(File.dirname(__FILE__) + '/../fixtures/zips.csv')
}.should_change(ZipCode, :count).by(100)

See http://rspec.rubyforge.org/rspec/1.2.8/classes/Spec/Matchers.html#M000435 for the documentation of that method.
