My class and I went to watch Holes at IRT, and I personally did not enjoy it very much. The acrots did a fantastic job at their part but I thought it was way to predictable and more for younger kids. The background setting was very nice. The sounds were amazing and also the costumes, they made the play feel like we were really there. In my opinion you had to use to much imagination. Hopefully I get to go back and watch another play sometime with my english class and I hope it is more interesting.

[...] Read full review “…“Her Naked Skin” pays deep homage to the martyrs of forced feeding and the militant feminists who practiced sharp shooting in Epping Forest (just in case). Like Dame Edith Smythe’s magnificent suffragette anthem, Melissa Riemer remains stalwart in action as a principled proponent of sexual equality. Roger Smart’s brilliant 18-member ensemble conjure up the pre-World War I agitation that only that war could quiet and finally reward.
I agree with you, "the challenge with Rent is that it has such a strong fan base that any deviation may be met with resistance." I applaud Cromer's will and strength of a different perspective. However, I do disagree with Angel's portrayal. It simply did not work for me, or many others that I've spoken with that witnessed it. I, unfortunately, was grossed out by him.

This is, by the way, one of my favorite parts of the theater. Discussing and learning others' opinions of a show, so please don't take anything I'm saying as a personal attack at you. I'm simply disagreeing with your views.

I've always been more a purist when it comes to musicals. (I'd much rather attend a straight play.) In regards to a musical, I've always been of the mindset, "It's a MUSICAL, cast it with SINGERS." Even more so with a show that has lyrics, harmonies, and emotional ties as strong as this particular show does.

As a Julie Schroll fan as well as a huge fan of John Patrick Shanley's "Doubt," I was eager to read this review. Although well-written, I MUST take issue with the critic's statement that Donald Muller's skin color didn't make much of a difference to the story line... what?! The year was 1964, the place was the Bronx! Donald Muller was the only African-American student in a school full of tough Irish and Italian kids. Of course it makes a difference. But more than that, the opportunities for black youth at the time - private school vs. public school, college acceptance, etc - were drastically different and, in this particular play, account partly for Mrs. Muller's motivation in letting things stand - "it's only 'til June." What I admire about Shanley's work - and this play in particularly - is his craftsmanship. Every "i" is dotted, every "t" is crossed. Time, place, each character's past history and skin color are essential to this plot. Nothing is random. And that's the way it should be A great lesson in playwriting.

ms. walsh,

i was pleased to see that, although you are not an "animal person", you find animal circuses disturbing. they're a horrible display of cruelty and sadness, aren't they?

however, i was very unhappy to see you lightheartedly joke about wanting a mink coat. i would imagine that, if you knew the reality of fur acquisition, you would be horrified and find nothing funny about it, and you certainly would no longer desire the coat. i strongly encourage you to educate yourself on the fur industry. while unpleasant, the information is important for you to have. below is a link to a video.

thank you.
