Something that could be useful would be to enlist Rob and the others to take a series of photos to illustrate the guards and attacks... a useful and interesting Sunday in the park activity.

Interesting area, and, you're right - such a taboo one. Despite so many having been in these circumstances. Reminds me a bit of a doco I saw on Peter Singer trying to get the issue of how hospitals decide how people die to be clarified (his point was they *do* decide - whether they'll treat pneumonia or not, what treatments they'll give or withold etc. - but it's just not talked about. Similarly hospitals will rarely talk about mistakes, so they can't address them, because they're terrified of litigation).

I'd probably rather hear veterans talk more than theorise. This guy sounds like he's been in the field, and to hear his own experience would be valuable. But he sounds on more shaky ground when he tries to generalise (but people so want to generalise because then it sounds like they're saying something far more important than just their own story). But, yeah, a book that asked the same question of a range of veterans - probably ideally anonymously so they wouldn't feel so pressured to say what they think they should. Trends would be interesting, but I suspect so would the range of responses.

Chatting to a guy this week at work he talked about an uncle of his who'd had to storm a beachhead. "Forget all this stuff about charging up the hill. I just found the first ditch I could and hid there." But some other guys would have charged up the hill. I'd be a lot more interested in teaching this sort of history too - first hand accounts, rather than 'The ANZACS were this' or that.

Yeah, it does get a bit hard to take when in the name of democracy and tolerance churchgoers get told, "We refuse to listen to your opinions - your voice is entirely invalid. That would be mixing church and state."
