Also one of the reasons I am an Android guy - I like files and folders. I have become efficient manipulating files using that structure. I dislike having to learn new ways to do basic things, even when I know deep down that this is probably limiting and trapping me into a mindset as to how things *should* work. It's a balance between being efficient and being innovative. Most of the time, I need to be efficient, which means I don't have a lot of time to devote to relearning basic tasks I have known for years how to do.

I don't mind it as well, and I think that once we add some other external repositories to it people will begin to see the real value of the system. But it does play with the well understood file management method most people are familiar with. When people feel they have to re-learn something as basic as file management, then they get cranky. And I don't totally blame Moodle here. I think we have done a poor job anticipating and preparing for the difference.

Pedagogy drives Technology drives Teachers mad? :)

I actually like the new file system though. It seems much more teacher friendly. However we have yet to see how our teachers get on with it.

I agree that as an LMS based on a social constructivist model, Moodle is not meant to be *just* a 'file repository' . But that doesn't mean we can always totally avoid using a repository feature, so this feature needs to work well. I'm not convinced the developers have got it quite right just yet - eg uploading a zipped set of files in folders can be achieved but it's not very intuitive as it requires a slightly clunky work around in the current version.

PS on an analogous note, part of the reason I use an Android device is it gives me a standard and fully accessible file / directory system - a well-proven model that works for me and many others. I get a bit frustrated with iOS because the file system isn't transparent.

I was happy to see both Mimi Ito and Howard Rheingold comment on George's post because that is what I see as part of the conversation & connections that need to happen.

I think there's even a deeper reason for the recognition of theorists & practitioners in this space - one of the tenets of connected learning *should be* attribution, not just because attribution is ethical and professionally the right thing to do but because without it, you are disconnecting from previous understandings of individuals and groups - those that have explored these questions and spaces for many years previous to this *new* initiative.

To me it's interesting (=not necessarily positive) that all of these initiatives come from from separate institutions/organizations/companies. I agree that open courses are an important trend. But, I am waiting for more collaborations across institutional silos. Why isn't Stanford working with MITx. Why is Thrun setting up a new and separate company?
