Joanna

It's always a delight to visit your blog. I love your concern for readers, comments and your willingness to learn from others.

You said, "I appreciate the comments here because I like getting to know you, I learn from the ideas and information you share, I stretch from the feedback you give me, I get new ideas for posts from the questions you ask."

Wow, how might the blogosphere be different if this was the intention of bloggers.

Joanna,

My Self-Publishing Primer is really a primer, whereas Bowerman's book is a college textbook.

Someone who is in the early stages of deciding whether they're interested in self-publishing might start with my primer to get an overview. Then if they decide they want to pursue it future, they can move on to The Well-Fed Self-Publisher to really learn how to do it.

Brad, that's a very good question and an issue that's addressed in the book. The answer is yes, which means you need to work hard to dispel those negative perceptions and create a 100% professional looking product. Bowerman's book is self-published and you'd never know. The main advantage of going down this route is that you get control of promoting and marketing it. After bitter experience with my only published book this seems like a *very* big advantage.

Lillie, thank you! I thought about including your excellent primer on self-publishing but thought the post was going to get over-long... I'll find a way to highlight it a future point I hope.

Although I'm always happy to get comments on my posts, no matter how old, I often choose not to comment on someone else's old post. It think the main reason is because everyone else has moved on. I also choose not to comment if I'm far down on the list to comment. I don't know why. It's silly really and you raise some very good points. Yet again, I'll be thinking of you everytime I write a "late" comment somewhere. I guess it's shouldn't matter if I'm late for the party in the blogosphere, because I'm rarely on time for parties in real life!

Have a great day.

Joanna,
Congratulations on deciding what your first book will be. You have a ton of valuable material here to work with.

As you know, I'm a big fan of self-publishing though certainly not as experienced or successful as Peter Bowerman! Most of my clients self-publish, and I love helping them turn their ideas into published books.

Thank you for the detailed review, Joanna. More and more authors seem to be taking this route. Is there a perception in the market that self published books are of lesser quality? I've heard writers express a concern about that issue.

Hi Barbara, good to see you. You prompted a great conversation about the challenges of blogging yesterday - thanks. I also loved the way you replied to all the comments. I know it takes a ton of work to do that, but picking up and reflecting on the reflections that have come back to you is a way to make each reader feel extremely valued.

I love the plug in - it gives me a good overview of what's going on. I think there are other features you can use with it but watching it for comments whenever they come in is the main one I use it for.

Jeanne, thanks for the thought you've put into how we could make it work. Your point about generating feedback around our own chapters might work, though it is challenging as you say if some people have read it all and others haven't... plus readers of the book might pick it up at any point in the future and come over... so you'd need to find a way of showing them the conversation.

Hmm, thinking out loud here...

Maybe something at the AoC site...?

Definitely worth continuing to think about.
