Alan, even though this is one of the most simple concepts you teach consultants, it's one of the most valuable. I can trace almost every unsuccessful attempt at a proposal to the fact that I went ahead and said "yes" to this request and most often hit a dead end.

Alan,

When you speak of wine, I’m reminded of a funny (at least I thought it was funny) wine story that you were part of.

A couple of years ago you were the keynote at an IMCNE event. During your presentation you made a comment about Thunderbird Wine. I was sitting in the second row, was taken aback that you even knew of its existence, said out loud, “what do you know about Thunderbird?” You didn’t answer you just looked at me with a smile of a young lad who many years ago who participated in right of passage which included imbibing oneself of Thunderbird which was more proximal to kerosene than wine.

You had to leave before I could get to you to compare experiences, but I walked away thinking, there’s someone that’s not afraid to try anything once.

Great advice Alan.

a colleague and I (both in our 50's) were presenting to a younger group of employees and he made reference to a Warren Zevon song that made perfect sense to me. Unfortunately we looked out at the group and only saw blank stares.

It was an instant wake up call to make our analogies more generation appropriate.

Beloit College publishes a wonderful "Mindset" list every year that really helps me get a perspective on where the younger generation's heads are at:

http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2013.php

There's a pulldown menu at the top where you can pick the year.

Psssh, Alan! Baruch Hashem!

You should fix the URL in your blog comments so that it hyperlinks properly to your site. (Feel free to delete this once you have done that. if it is "autofill" in your browser, you need to fix it so it stays correct in future post comments as well.)

Alan,

Very appropriate and timely advice. I made a similar mistake several years ago when I mentioned the Temptations and Four Tops to a class I was conducting. A few people knew of whom I was speaking but most did not. I couldn’t believe it, who doesn’t know the words to My Girl? left to ask what you were talking about.

A balance of patience and optimisim is a great reminder to all of us. The stock market is one side of the recovery coin. Since consumer spending represents 70 of the U.S. economy, private sector, long-term job growth is the best leading inidcator of a sustainable recovery.

Government injected job growth is artificial and "shovel-ready-short-term." Once the private sector starts hiring, then we will on the recovery road. Six months plus of positive job growth will convince me. Until then, yes, stay positive and provide all the value we can!

Hi Alan. Happy Birthday!

I hope to be even somewhat as productive, proficient, and fit (both personally and professionally) as you are when I'm 64!

You are a great role model.

Virgin value their customers and know how to look after them. The same can't be said for other more established airlines. V Australia is relatively new in providing international services to and from Australia and in my opinion leaves our our long established carrier in it's wake.

Sex is a sport only if it's in pairs. The sole performers wouldn't count, with or without music.

When poker playing is a sport and poker players are athletes, then computer programmers will be sexy and lawyers will start to leave big tips. That ain't happening.

I know you and Stuart Cross are in cahoots about this notion. We discussed exactly this during the breaks of the Canada vs. U.S. hockey game last night, while in England, and he concluded first there was too much subjectivity in the scoring, and then under protest resorted to, "it's set to music," which definitely makes it non-sport-like!

Alan
Very interesting observation. I never thought I liked ice dancing, but this Olympics I found it more intriguing than the figure skating. I like all sports, in fact in my Twitter profile I call my self a sports nut. My definition of a sport? A physical activity that has a beginning, middle and an end and some sort of scoring system: a score. Ballet Dancing = no score. Competitive ballet dancing? That does sound intriguing.

No: When you're traveling to meet with clients, especially at a distance, tell prospects you're "in the neighborhood" and would like to stop by. The farther away, the more likely they will give you the time. I actually have a sample "in the neighborhood" letter in "Breaking Through Writer's Block."

Alan, regarding "set up meeting with prospects while traveling for clients", can you clarify a little bit?

Should we be setting up meetings between our prospects and customers? That works for me but I wanted to be sure that I understood the point.

Thanks!

He sent back a snarky email "Gee... are you with the Jewish mafia also? See further below..." He uses different "employee" names. Sigh. Sent him to spam assassin. Recommend we all do.
Oh I so agree - the customer service is so bad here, you couldn't make it up - the service in the States was fantastic. Just look what happen to transport in London when it snows !

I'd be shocked if you don't have your meals planned for the trip and you probably have some favourites to re-visit too. I also know un-solicited advice is never high on your list - but if you are stuck for a meal maybe worth visiting the Michelin 2 star Pied a Terre /www.pied-a-terre.co.uk or it's sister that I actually prefer L'Autre www.lautrepied.co.uk

BTW - every time I have found a craps table in London - no body is playing on it. Where is the fun in that?

The club is small compared to casinos, but they do have craps and I've played there. Except for a few places, customer service in the UK is pretty awful compared to the States. Most of my colleagues who live here agree.

Alan, I hope London treats you well, It seem like you are in good hands so far.

If you make it to the casino, do let me know if they have a decent craps table, I went to Vegas two weeks ago for a 3 day conference (lsitening only for me)and it's great to pay an enthusiastic game of craps.

I'll be surprised if you don't have some good cutomers service stories from you visit here.

"Show me the money." Most collaborators want the money in your pocket!

A guy, outraged by my view, ended his Monday Morning Memo subscription today because he believes collaboration is everything, a pedestal which cannot be upset. Imagine being so threatened by another view that you run away with your hands over your ears refusing to listen any more?!

Busted.

Tossing around ideas for collaboration feels like work, but it's not.

It's kind of like talking about working our versus actually doing it.

Thanks for the reminder. I have a new book out, The Triangle of Truth, and I have people coming out of the woodwork for potential "collaboration".

Now I've got a great answer.

Alan, great advice, and great job with the role plays. With sometimes vague (and often conflicting)comments from the "clients," you showed how a pro handles the conversation.

Your comments following each role play were also very helpful.

I worked for several years at a TV station in Minneapolis, where weather reporting is taken very seriously. The weather department had a staff of about seven meteorologists, including one who had a Ph.D. in that field. Their weather center contained the latest in doppler radar, satellite imaging, remote sensing and so forth. What I loved to watch was how, when a big storm hit town, they all left the electronic gizmos and immediately ran to the window to have a look!

News broadcasters and TV weather people the world over have an unwarranted dose of self-importance and highly inflated ego's. And all obvioulsy overpaid. For goodness sake they should just be presenting the news, not creating it or dramatizing it. I would rather watch the news being read by a chimp than listen to the dramatics of news readers or to be told to 'rug up' tomorrow because there 'might' be a cold snap!

Alan,

After reading your comments I had to read the article to see what it had to say. After completing it I understood why you laughed out loud.

If you want some additional entertainment read some of the comments on the article a number of them are really funny. The only one that had any merit was from John Felkins if I had to guess is someone who has attended your mentoring program.

It's boring because it's so predictable until the final two minutes, during which they call times out and deliberately foul. It's become a dumb game, no finesse, brute strength. Might as well watch cage fighting, where the IQs are higher and no one has guns in the locker room.

Holy cow! Are you in shape this morning or what? Did you eat extra Wheeties?

As for pro B-ball, it's boring because they're giants on a small surface. It's as if football were played on a hockey rink and hockey were played on a b-ball court.

Great post. While I see pro basketball only on the news, I thought perhaps the rules had changed. When I grew up, there was a prohibition against "traveling." Now traveling is routine and no longer results in a turnover. I could have made more baskets if I never had to dribble.

Just curious. He just had an interesting take on dealing with poor self image.

Maltz was a plastic surgeon who noticed that often times drastic cosmetic changes had little to no effect patients their self-image. They continued to see themselves as having too big a nose, too large of ears and that people were still laughing at them, etc.

The overlying message was that you have to 'see' yourself doing something 'in the theater of your mind' first before you could ever pull it off in real life.

If you can't imagine yourself one day being a successful independent consultant or if you can't see yourself quoting a client $75,000 for a project then you never will be.

Have you ever read Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. If so, what did you think?
