We did make it to the unagi restaurant last night. It was perfectly-cooked eel! Thanks for the recommendation!

I was really surprised that even hotels in Japan don't have wireless. I had expected to keep a journal on the iphone and transfer text with evernote, but it was really hard. Wifi seems to be a mostly american thing.

(In norway, I saved the text to and SD card and just transferred it over with a card reader. Clunky, but bulletproof.)

Be sure to go to that unagi restaurant before you leave kyoto!

Nice review - you've got a good clear writing style (is that the engineer in you?). I enjoyed The Power Of Now although I must admit I winced a little at some of the pseudo-scientific stuff but mostly let it pass. The book was enough to give me a headstart into mindfulness practice which has been an unequivocal joy and eye-opener. One other recommendation I would make without hesitation is the podcasts at zencast.org - especially the ones by Gil Fronsdal.

To the various chiropractors leaving comments: you have not addressed the concerns in my posting. Insofar as the basis of chiropractic does not agree with scientific evidence about how the body works, it is just faith healing. As noted, though, I find it reasonable that chiropractic might have some benefits purely from its physical therapy aspect.

Check out this talk by Steven Pinker for a dissenting view. My understanding of the issue is that it's foolish to think either side - nature or nurture - has everything to do with it.
