I have done two fall crossings, but they were both more Southerly than the South Hampton to New York crossing, but I can give you a few suggestions.

Day Wear:

At least one or two really nice up scale looking warm up suit. Make sure it is a really nice one, not just sweats and a hoodie, but black velour type, or a high quality track suit. You can wear this for active type activities like deck walking or fitness classes.

I believe also on Cunard, you are expected to dress up some what for lunch, so I would suggest a pair of black slacks, brown slacks and khaki slacks, with coordinating casual tops and blazers. You might also bring along a basic black skirt that could be paired with boots or closed toed shoes. I sometimes wear ribbed turtle necks or mock turtle necks. Something you would wear at home at a nice fall luncheon. Bring coordinating shoes and boots. Make sure that things mix and match, or you'll have way more luggage than you need.

For Evening:

Double check your itinerary, but I believe that all evenings on "Crossings" are formal, so bring you assorted gowns or very dressy pants suits. You'll probably indoors most evenings so you can wear sleeveless or strapless, but most rooms are not very warm, so long sleeves, and even velvet appropriate for a fall crossing. Don't go with summer colors or a tropical theme, stick with more traditional fall colors from the jewel or earth tone pallet. Bring a wrap of some kind if you tend to get chilly, but most likely you will not be in the night air at all. For evening closed or open toe shoes are appropriate for a crossing, though dressy strappy sandals are very popular for evening. Again your not going to be outside in the evenings, so dressy heeled sandals are fine.

I always bring a few basics like a black blazer and black leather coat. I also bring accessories like scarves to help change the look when I repeat a jacket or pants suit.

I hope that helps, it is actually very similar to what I brought on my last two crossings, though I also had some shorts and sundresses in case we had warmer days. On the South Hampton to New York, you probably won't have any of those warmer days. But still bring your swim suit at they have indoor pools and hot tubs.

I hope that helps. Enjoy your cruise.

I have gleaned a lot of advice from your website, but one thing haven't been able to find anywhere is have a list of wardrobe suggestions geared to the specific season of the cruise. I will be taking the Queen Mary 2 from Southampton to New York at the beginning of October. Most recommendations list clothing appropriate to a spring or summer crossing. Could you please provide me with or direct me to some guidelines for my wardrobe for a fall crosssing? Thank you.

People its not about who did what, I only posted this to show what really happen as far as how the crew re-acted to whoever it was that called them and was blown off and the people then had to go top side to get the ship to turn. The point is I will never ever set foot on that ship again. Tell me the thought of them blowing off the thought of people out there, then tell me the 4 hour tender at grand caymen did not set you off. then tell me the 4 hours to get off the ship when we return did not get to you, then tell me if they lost your luggage like ours that you would not be upset. The bottom line is yes they did turn and save those people but look what it took to get them to do that, then they almost kill them by letting the ship get to close to them, I would hate to see what would have happen to the people me included on that ship if there had been a real problem, I mean really how fast did the crew react at anytime things was not right. BTW still no luggage, very poor responce from MSC. If they over anything other than my money for the lost luggage I dont want it. No free on board credit, no free trip ( unless its on another ship) Now again it really dont matter who seen who first its the point of how the MSC handled the problem Very Very Scary.

Cor,

You are still able to smoke on most cruise ships, just not in areas where it would most likely interfere with others' enjoyment of their cruise. It is about finding balance. Most ships designate some areas where smoking is allowed. These areas are generally easily avoidable by those who do not wish to be around cigarette smoke. For those who wish to smoke they need only enjoy their cigarettes is the designated areas of the ships. Many ships have both indoor and outdoor designated smoking areas.

so we have banned smoking, now the fatties will come, because fat people are twice as much sick as smokers (!!) and people who drink above average a stunning 4 times more illnesses, and you allmighty non-smoker are paying for this too, so now what ban those also?

Point is, get your balance, stop complaining and this seems the biggest issue with many, you are always just complaining about everything: Steward one mornign "too late" with good morning Madam or Sir, complaint filed, drink with one ice cube too much; complained filed. Shower water 3 seconds off presure: complained filled....pffffff I wish you simply could have the balance in your lifes

Well not really, there is glass and crystal for sale on the ship, but the Corning Museum of Glass is a non-profit organization. They do not sell any of the pieces made on board the ship. Instead they give it away to passengers in free raffles. Not once during the presentations at the hot glass show is there a sales pitch.

This was actually the one refreshing things about the Hot Glass show, that while so many new things added to cruise ships these days seems to be for an extra charge or fee, the show is free, and if you are lucky enough to win a piece of glass, the glass is free. We received three free pieces of glass on our Solstice cruise. The first was a glass guitar designed by my 11 year old during the You Design It show for the youth, the second was a small paper weight that one of the gaffers made from scrap for my son who had attended every show faithfully, and the third was a vase we won in the free raffle on the last day.

Additionally, some of the glass makers have some of their independently created pieces for sale in the gift shops, but again those are pieces are created by the artists in their own studios, and are for sale to help the artist supplement their income. The only time you hear about those pieces is when someone asks the artist personally if where they can buy their work.

While they still may want you to purchase some of the exclusive crystal, the museum makes no sales pitches and the show functions as part of the not for profit, Corning Museum of Glass.

I found the show itself to be one the best parts of my Solstice cruise.

You missed the whole point of the glass show. Corning owns a company called Steuben. It is the only pure crystal glassware made in the United States. It is very expensive. They have a shop on board.

The point is to see how this exclusive glassware is made.

Stimmer,

Thanks for the heads up on the 21 year old drinking age for Oceania. I have updated the chart.

The 21 and up policy is a policy implemented by the cruise line and NOT required by law when in international waters. However, most cruise lines do not want the liability of having young drinkers consuming more alcohol than they are able to handle. The 21 and over LAW does usually apply while cruising Alaska and Hawaii, because often those cruises spend much of their time in US waters rather than International waters. The cruise lines also dont' want to have to look at their location on a GPS in order to determine if they can serve a 19 year old a drink.

The Apostleship of the Sea seems to have been engaged to contract Priests in good standing in order to make sure that priest that had been dismissed for the reasons above were not still serving on Cruise ships.

I am trying to get through to someone that I am not receiving communicatons from Holland America. I would especially like to have the new Mariner Magazine. My Mariner # is 002223386. I have sailed twice on the HAL line, the most recent being Jan.10, 2009 on the msOOSTERDAM to the Mexican Riviera.
I prefer to receive the magazine by US mail. A friend and I would like to plan another trip in another year or so. Thank you.
