I liked to say that it is just a bit pricy but worth the price if willing to take some time and play it, its only a game. Stop complaining like a bunch of six year olds. If you don't like it don't play it and if you injoy it then relax and just play it.

A small coment about what annon said, DUDE you need to get out more if you think women are worthless then you got some problems man dude get your head out of the 80's just beause your a geek doesent mean your allergick to women.

Fact is, every game whether it be mini wargaming or video or even a pinball machine, there will be problems. From what i've seen though GW is trying to fix most of these and thats good, but dont expect this to be the single most perfect thing in the world, if you dont enjoy it dont play, if you dont mind a few holes and messed up rules, just stick with it and you'll probably end up having alot of fun. The codex problem isnt as real as you make it sound though, because if someone has a tyranid army, they'll generally have a codex of their own, if they dont want you to see or use it, tell them you dont feel like dealing with them and walk away. One of the only reasons you have problems in this game is other players, miscommunication between you and another player, and rules that dont quite make sense. As for the painting of figures, there are major players who dont even want to paint their figures, if you want to go for it, if not thats ok, but dont sit there and be envious of GW's figures, its just a game and you can have them sent out and pay a professional painter of mini's do that for you. Its all about how you handle all of this that you have fun with the game.

As for women changing their numbers on us, i play this game with my woman, so thats not an actual problem.

A couple of things - Statistic-lite games like Spirit of the Century or Over the Edge are more newbie-accessible. White-Wolf pared down their combat system for the New World of Darkness. Exalted may be complicated (especially 2nd Ed.), but it rewards player inventiveness -just in describing their own actions- with mechanical bonuses and limited narrative editing power. And Nobilis (my current favorite) eschews dice for resource management, and encourages out-thinking your opponent to out-hitting him (and the mechanics of the game support that strategy), even though it can be quite a mind-bender. In short, looking outside WoTC stuff, especially at the respected indie games of the last decade, will bring you pretty close to the game you're striving for. And if you can't find it, my man, just write it up yourself! Go for it!

Really? We are all just a bunch of losers. What else are we gonna spend our time and money on? Women? I don't think so. At least the 40k figures don't change their phone numbers because of you.

I got both of my Warhammer armies by bying them second-hand. I still ended up paying 400 euros for my Imperial Fists, but the guy who made them is a wizard in painting and converting models (he actually ordered special shoulder pads and backpacks for each model via Forge World!). I, for one, don't care how good the paintjob on my army is. If I'm able to present something that resembles an unified force, I'm happy. I'm in it for the gaming part mostly anyway.

My biggest concern with your article is the way you criticise the chance elements of the game. Frankly, I question any system wherein things work the same way all the time. One major part of the fun of Warhammer and all associated games is that, since it's based off a D6 system, even the most powerful individuals have a roughly 84% chance of succeeding at any given task.

Marines getting mauled by Genestealers as recompense for killing too few? That's how it's supposed to go. But the Genestealer player is likewise punished for putting his expensive troops in a position where they can be fired upon. Indeed, the chance elements forces you to react to unexpected results, but you can still rely upon averages (and hell, sometimes units surpass what you considered their potential!).

Warhammer 40k's biggest issue is its simplicity compared to 2nd Edition. It's been robbed of a lot of tactical ploys and possibilities. It does essentially mean that it's mostly dice rolling unless you have a dense set of terrain, like City Fight.
