I've had mixed feelings about Masque. On one hand, it's really no different from flavored lubes, except that it's easier to carry around or travel with. At the same time, presenting it as a product to cover up the taste of someone's genitals/body fluids does come quite close to sex-negativity. It has some resonance with the "women- be sure to douche so your vagina doesn't smell" kinds of messages, though with men on the receiving end.

Frankly, I think that if they had gone with a different name (why mask the flavor?) and had approached their target markets differently, there wouldn't be all this kerfluffle over it. But the way that they initially promoted their product left me with an unfortunate taste in my mouth.

I really don't understand those who think that Masque isn't sex positive. If a product can help someone better enjoy part of their sexual activities (in this case, oral sex) isn't that the definition of sex positive? Making sex a more positive experience.

If Masque is sex-negative, then why aren't sex toys like vibrators or dildos considered sex negative? Why isn't lube sex negative? Why isn't pornography or erotica sex negative? (Note, I don't think they are - but follow my logic for a moment if you will...) You could make the argument that if you need these "extras" in order to enjoy sex, then you're negative about sex. Now, in reality most people would admit that these "extras" make sex more enjoyable for them and therefore make sex more positive. That's how I feel about Masque.

It doesn't make you sex-negative if you don't like the taste of semen (or do, but acknowledge the fact that many people don't). If you don't like to perform oral sex, then that's okay. But if the only thing keeping you from enjoying it, is the taste... then Masque is a really easy way to make sex more positive and enjoyable. That's sex positivity if I ever saw it.

I can really relate to what you're saying. I'm beginning that path to happy solitude, a peaceful quiet. The past year I've been frantically trying to fill the space so I could avoid my own pain and sorrow.

Quiet is good. Alone is good.

I was feeling the same way. Not only did I disagree with what she said, but it made me uncomfortable to read, like someone was outing themselves as a racist by using the "N-word" over and over or something.

I would have felt much better if she had written entirely from her own perspective, rather than lumping every woman into her POV.

Granted, sometimes I think cocks look silly. But then, I often think women's goody bits look just bizarre in some of the photos I've seen.

Thanks for the fascinating read. *smiles*

Good for you and your family that you and your ex have reached a place of understanding and peace - as a child of bitterly divorced parents I can't tell you how many times I use to wish for something similar and wonder if it would have changed my outlook on marriage and relationships if they had found a fraction of the peace you and your ex have found. Congrats on creating a new life for you and your kids.

I'm glad that you're taking time to relax! You both need it and deserve it! And, it's always beneficial to reevaluate how we spend our time and what makes us happy. Look forward to hearing about your plans and not surprised that Chat Lounge and Ducky D inspired you! xoxo

Thanks for this post! This story didn't get a lot of coverage in DC so I appreciated the chance to read Melissa's post and your views. You've given me a lot of food for thought about the need to decriminalize sex work. xoxo
