Hi Hollis,

Thanks for the note. I lost steam on the hammered dulcimer project a few years ago but it is still on a back burner. I'll keep you posted if I make any progress on it.

All the best,

Doug

Hi, Doug. When will you start building hammer dulcimers? I started
playing small hammer dulcimers (12/11) for the same reason as you,
less weight, and now I find I prefer their sound to larger models. The sound is more immediate, less of a hollow or boxy sound than larger
dulcimers. Unfortunately, most of the smaller dulcimers are considered student level instruments, so the quality of workmanship is less, which is a shame. Keep me posted.

Not sure I'd go that far, but I love the impulse. A young friend of mine once built a log home, and the first task accomplished was at the forge making a broad-axe. That's vertical integration to an extreme :)

John Pitcock: I'm using a rosewood fingerboard as a straight edge. I do use some power tools to save some time with the rough stuff. It would be interesting to make one sometime using nothing but hand tools! Cut down the tree with an ax.....

The straightedge looks to be wood. Is it, or steel? p.s. - nice to know that you could (if necessary) build without the benefit of power tools.

Our house is about 100 years old and we've had some interesting restoration projects going on here from time to time! Glad you like my choices of wood. I always say that the tree does the hard part!

It reminds me when we were finishing the baseboard, window, and door trim. Baseboard was 7 inches plus in height. Each piece had three coats of stain and three coats of a sealer. The house was built in 1900. I know it is not quite the same as making dulcimers but I know the feeling. Your wood choice are beautiful.
