Hi Daniel,
Thanks for this how-to! A couple of details I had to work out other users might want to know about:
1. I had to set the string '/opt/local/bin' in front of my '/usr/local/bin' in my .bash_profile to give MacPorts packages precedence. Otherwise, the Snow Leopard packaged version is executed.
2. I had to set the following line in my .matplotlib/matplotlibrc file to enable the MacOSX backend or graphics wouldn't display:
'backend : macosx'

In the Windows-world with Win 7 this will no longer always require an app if you don't need any more precise controls - I've found the standard "Aero Snap" thing which makes a window half of the screen (and some other small things) is quite good for my use.

The only problem with it is that so far I haven't managed to activate it on the border of the monitor which is shared by both monitors - it only seems to work on the side of the screen which doesn't "continue" past the monitor.

Earlier I used an app called GridMove on Win XP which seemed pretty good, so there's another tool for Windows users if you don't find WinSplit to your liking.

White boards! Before I had an office, I would take a conference room (in the off-hours) and work through my thoughts on a large white board. Lots of space, multi-coloured markers, easy to erase and to literally step back and look at the big picture, a white board is an essential tool in my problem solving process, both by myself and in collaboration with others. Concept sketches, process flowcharts, lists... with a digital camera or an iPhone it's easy to capture the results. The point is, it doesn't matter how or where, but the premise of dirty writing remains: get something down.
