It's so cool that much of my favorite music as a grew up tends to have ties back to some of the same people. I've always loved Kate Bush, Pink Floyd, Duran Duran, The Firm (from the 80's) Weather Report, some Paul Young... After looking into to it a little more it's just a couple fretless bass players

It will be awesome to see RUSH perform MOVING PICTURES in its entirety. I was able to see Rush 3 times on the original Moving Pictures tour, Max Webster opened for them in Louisville Ky, It was so awesome!! Thanks Ticketwood.com for offering me discounted Rush Tickets . They were using a movie screen behind them that projected really cool images during the show. They were so far ahead of everyone else at the time… and still are.

it looks like someone sitting on a stool, viewed from behind.

which would make the exclamation point a tramp stamp, or maybe an urgent warning? a tramp stamp for people with extremely poisonous butts? like a monarch butterfly, but for tramps? with stamps?

the circle around the outside looks like an aura, or a halo.

in conclusion: "warning, extremely spiritual butt, do not touch"

Dude you are forgetting many things. First. There is no standard 59 profile neck for necks that are hand finished. Secondly the pickups are Usa BBers? The ones you find in regular gibsons. Third you forgot technical details. Is it a real maple top? Forget the veneer it is there for the eye. A paul purist 'll ask for a 3/4 inch maple top. And a 17 degreed tilted headstock, which this guitar is supposed to have. How many pieces is the body? Instead you are giving us a review that is entirely personal and actually does not interest me much to be honest.

I appreciate your comments and information. I was excited when I pre-ordered my Epiphone 1959 Faded Ice Tea. After waiting four months it finally arrived damaged. The neck pick up broken off and loose. I sent it back for an exchange. (Musicians Friend very nice about the exchange) I received the exchange today, again excited and it arrived damaged again! A small hole nicked on the side of the body. Will send back tomorrow. Not sure if I want another replacement, especially after reading your story. Thanks.

I've also been really loving this year's hop crisis. I remember not liking it in the past (I'm pretty picky when it comes to super-hoppy beers - there's a certain dank flavor profile that I find really repulsive, and another dank flavor profile I really like :) and I'm not sure if 21a hit the mark this year, or if my tastes have evolved.

I heard another report from someone who tried it both at the Bistro and at 21a that they thought the tap at 21a was much tastier.

I have to agree and for whatever reason (maybe the swanee river like pace?), baseball has more than its fair share of good writing. My personal favorite is a melancholy one, coming from your famous Yale alum, Bart Giamatti...

"The Green Fields of the Mind "
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.

I have to agree and for whatever reason (maybe the swanee river like pace?), baseball has more than its fair share of good writing. My personal favorite is a melancholy one, coming from your famous Yale alum, Bart Giamatti…

“The Green Fields of the Mind ”
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.

Even though Costner cheesed this one out of the park in the movie adaptation, I've heard similar feedback about Michael Shaara's "For Love of the Game".

I've not read this myself (on my very long list - but not being available on Kindle keeps it further down the list) - but his "Killer Angels" sits comfortably in my top 25 of all time.

Hi Ethan, kudos on your foray into the realm of politics. As assuredly as the unexamined life isn't worth living, so is the over-examined one boring as s**t, so you've quite a few more government policy/societal impact posts to go before you start losing your fun-loving whimsy.

Anyway, thanks for bringing Goldhill's well-reasoned points into relief. Let us hope that the views of market-controlled costs and healthcare as required maintenance rather than emergency service catches on!

@bjorn Yep, I really like Brett Pontoni, the spirits buyer at Binny's. Really nice guy, good palate, customer-focused, and gets lots of cool exclusive bottlings.

And it *used* to be that it was cheaper to order from them and have it shipped than to buy at shops in California - especially since you pay nearly 10% extra for tax when you buy locally. But no more - often cheaper in California these days. I've been surprised to see how quickly and how high Binny's prices have risen in recent years.

this is truly god's work eep. just bought several bottles of the very old barton from binny's. looked at the other selections at binny's and their prices aren't very reasonable. i'll have to find the others locally but with shipping it is still reasonable it it is indeed hard to find..

now that buffalo trace is 19.99 at my local, it looks like it is going to be a very bourbon 2010.

@Greg J: I think Old Grand-Dad comes in several bottling strengths. I suspect the recipes are the same (though the Bonded is required to come from the same year, so might have some more flavor variation). I bet those bars are pouring 80 or 86 proof OG as their well bourbon. Still probably good stuff - just that I haven't had it alongside the 100 proof Bonded or 114 proof to compare.

I know Rittenhouse 100 Rye and Old Grand Dad well, and Bulleit and Jim Beam a big less, and an a fan of all. I'm always impressed when Old Grand Dad is the well bourbon at a dive bar -- def way above the quality bar I expect for $2 a shot, but I find it as the house pour at many spots in SF. Nice collection, EEP.

Yes, love Washington reds. But very little Pinot grown up there - have to head to Oregon.

Pinot in general has such low yields that I think it's really difficult to produce well at an affordable price.

@Bob Lefsetz: I don't think I ever consciously followed you on Twitter, but I haven't unfollowed anyone in a while. And as of this reply I don't yet have a DM there from you (I'm @ethanprater on Twitter, if you need to find me).

I'm glad to read that this review of the new set was on a good system. I think mentioning it, even in a footnote, would go a long way to supporting that point, especially since the only other reference was just to the PC source.

Wow, I DM you on Twitter telling you what computer speakers I use and then you stop following me on Twitter and work me over?

As I told you, I use AUX speakers. Which are professional level speakers, the identical ones used for concerts. The fact that they're hooked up to my computer makes my opinion irrelevant?

I'd be stunned if these speakers aren't better than any stereo you own, and they're certainly better than the speakers the "hoi polloi" own.

Read about AUX here: http://www.auxout.com/Shop/

In regard to the Lagunitas beer, If it is a wet hop sack in the keg and it settled for a while your firsrt pour was hop sesidue from the bottom of the keg. ie( as when they want you to store your Hefe's upside down till your ready to tap)

Wet Hop beers are the exception to beer clarity rules if you will almost every brewer uses a different way to extract the hops/lupilin from the wort.
Cheers.

@Vic - Thanks for setting the question straight about the Fifty Fifty beers.

I've always showed up at opening time at the dozen or so festivals I've attended at The Bistro. But I wonder if some beers find their character after settling down or getting some time.

One year - I think it was a Wet Hop Festival - I had the first pour from a one-off Lagunitas brew (pouring at the bar, not in the tent). It was almost indistinguishable from orange juice. Color, taste, texture, even had pulp! Absolutely fascinating, but probably not what they were going for.

I stopped in later that afternoon, tried it again - almost a different beer, much more "normal" on all those attributes (but excellent - I think it even won in the judging).

(And it shouldn't keep going without saying - the Bistro Festivals are sensational. *Love* the Wet Hop and Barrel-Aged especially.)

The Brewer Todd Ashman was in attendance and I personnaly asked him about the possible mix up, he himself filled and labeled both kegs and was tasting the lighter colored Rye.
 So there it is.

@Alex - indeed, something was definitely mixed up early on. Might have been me, but I don't think so. When I went back to get both poured at the same time - wanted to straighten it out - another guy was (politely) questioning whether what they were pouring as the RyePA was indeed that beer. I suspect it got straightened out for the judging and later in the day.

I'm still eager to try some Fifty Fifty beers. Think I'm going to have to drive to Truckee to have them at the source.

I attended the event and worked on the RyePA with Todd Ashman who was also there. Neither beer was clear and certainly not anywhere close to lager clear. My best guess is that the author or person pouring may have mixed up the beers. I asked for the RyePA and the server tried to pour Rockslide until I found the RyePA myself and had him our it. This is not a knock to the servers as they had a monumental task.

Thanks for the kind words on Puffy Shirt. That was a beer Rodger and I did for my wedding this last Friday! You stated my goal exactly: a great session IPA with good body and a good amount of hop character. Cheers!
