Over the past 2 1/2 years, I have spent nearly 2,000 hours with New FamilySearch--beta-testing, teaching at our family history center, helping patrons, and cleaning my family tree. Several family history consultants asked me to write a manual for teaching New FamilySearch in their wards.

So, I have posted a 66-page manual, entitled How To Use New FamilySearch Correctly, in PDF format, at www.usingfamilysearch.com, from which any New FamilySearch patron is welcome to print it.

It provides tips and Do's and Dont's. Chapter 3 identifies the most efficient order of tasks to clean your family tree (so you won't be so overwhelmed). The manual also reviews New FamilySearch's future plans, and it evaluates the third-party software programs.

I will update it whenever there is a major revision to New FamilySearch, which is about every 3 months. (The next should be in early November.)

I offer it to your readers and hope it will help many.

Best regards,

Thanks for the recommendation. I've had the kids on BumperCar and KidZui. Both do the job, but are real clunky stand-alone browsers. I'll give K9 a shot.

I have been meaning to thank you for your wonderful comments about my dad. You have a wonderful way with words but you also sense some of the same things I have felt about my dad. Thank you so much for expressing them in a way that they can be share with those of us so far away.

I am going to try to share a list of some of the things dad published. Having just gone through the process of gathering digitizing all of his published works . . . .

Looks like the line wrapping may be funny but the list still comes through alright.

Thank again
Mike Meservy

Thank you. Inviting rather than forbiding seems to me to be the Lord's way. For example, his servants are to "teach, preach, expound, exhort, and <b>invite</b> all to come unto Christ." (DC 20:59.) We strive to invite, encourage, inspire, enlighten. Condemnation seems off the list. It's interesting to me that <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/121/41#41" rel="nofollow">D&C 121</a>, which says "... only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned," ends in part with these words: "Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly. <i>Then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God.</i>" Contemplation of the good, not condemnation of bad, seems the path the Lord invites us to follow. I suspect it motivates us all the best, which makes sense since the Lord does all he does for our benefit.

Good point. I've been intrigued by the depth of the parallels between the physical world, the laws of nature, and eternal spiritual principles. But that shouldn't be a surprise, I guess, because Christ said: "all things have their likeness, and all things are created and made to bear record of me, both things which are temporal, and things which are spiritual; things which are in the heavens above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth, and things which are under the earth, both above and beneath: all things bear record of me." (Moses 6:63. See also Alma 30:44.)

For example, at the center of each galaxy, we now understand, it seems there is a supermassive black hole, which is literally responsible for the formation of the galaxy, maintaining it in its order, and "giving light" to the other stars (causing their formation through its interaction with the other matter in that region of space). I intend to write about this in the future. As I pondered this recent understanding and its description in the Book of Abraham, I suddenly realized that this object is an excellent type and symbol of Christ. Even its measure of time, as described by Abraham, reinforces this concept and the nature of God and man beautifully, in ways that only make sense in the context of General Relativity.

This probably overcomplicates what you're saying, but I keep finding these parallels and they enhance my understanding of both temporal and spiritual things. (Consider, for example, the Uncertainty Principle and its implications on agency, faith, and action. A discussion for yet another day.) The creation is an intricate wonder!

Nice post. I think the bit about seeing presents too early is particularly effective. I'll have to remember that.
I like how you don't forbid, but kindly suggest that people wait.

Update: The latest edition of Kidzui installs icons for All Users. I am also informed ny the folks at Kidzui that they "are currently working on a time-limit feature, email for kids, and a homework helper feature." Sounds very promising.
