It's not a movie -- just a Powerpoint with movie-looking graphics.

You should be able to view the slideshow if you click on the posting.

I absolutely love this. What a great way to engage students with reading. I think what would make a great end cap for this mini video is a students reflection after the fact...what happened to the student after that assignment? When I was watching, I was wondering what the students were feeling and thinking. This is a very cool technique!

I would be in favor of a meeting date that is not during the middle of a semester like October or November.

If a date is selected during the semester then I hope folks will keep in mind that many of us (at least at Glendale) teach Friday classes. If we are asked to attend a Friday event, it means that we will not be able to teach. With that in mind, I think it's very important that whatever dates are selected we are given that information with a significant amount of lead time. I think this is especially important if a fall 2010 date is selected. If we can know the date(s) of the meeting before the start of the fall semester (like if we can know the date of the meeting by early August--at the latest), this gives us the ability to plan our class schedules, family responsibilities, etc.

Hi Maryanne and Jah'Shams! I really like your powerpoint presentation. I'm going to post mine sometime. I'm realizing how much more a role the emotional/affective part of education plays--by studying contextualized learning. Thanks for all your contributions on this subject. I think the 3 D storytelling is using the figures and acting out situations with them. Is that right?

The month isn't so important (although August will overlap with people's vacations). What matters is the travel and time commitment. Will the conferences be one-day regional events? If so, then any month is fine, especially if the conference is on a Saturday.

I enjoyed listening the reflections. It parallels a lot to my reflection on the Cerritos College fin project. It almost seems like we know what we are doing until we come across a speed bump to make us slow down and revisit what we have been doing and ask ourselves if what we are getting is what were looking for. In our project, we have also learned that first semester and first year students have a more difficult time committing to things outside of the classroom. A challenge of our group has been to get students in our math class to participate in a focus group. Nevertheless, I am positive that we will find the right carrot to bring them in and learn new things.

Making connections between your process and the students' seems to be leading to really good things. I hear you saying that the students experience is becoming clearer to you (they might need more scaffolding, they might not understand the value of the counselor, they will need to hold the camera more...) You're showing the benefits of seeing the students' work as similar to your own inquiry.

Thanks for sharing.

This video is an exceptional explanation of faculty inquiry. I'll be sharing it as often as possible on my campus to help move our campus culture to one that values inquiry and evidence.

Two things stood out to me in this article:

"'re-mediation'--that is, changing the environment and the means through which students are taught material they had not mastered before."

"Successful remedial programs set high standards, are focused on inquiry and problem-solving in a substantial curriculum, use a pedagogy that is supportive and interactive, draw on a variety of techniques and approaches, are in line with students' goals, and provide credit for course work."

And it's everything FIN!
