To tell you the truth the idea of Faust is in Nodame a lot more than you would think and not just in this situation. The whole idea of Chiaki’s dad is a bit like this….he sold his family in order to stay in his musical place in his head which is now one and the same as fame, which looks like it is the only thing that feeds him. In a lot of ways the integrity of the artist can be tested for the sake of fame or success….you get hints of it….with other characters. Some people might think the whole, get what you want, for the simple hand over of a soul no big deal because they don’t believe in the soul. So it looks like a win win to them. To go for success at this level you break some bones on the way up or work hard for the love of the music which joins you with humanity….not isolate you as fame can do….. So yeah, the Faust idea being one of those life choice reality things…is here too…with a lot more drama and poof—I don’t see it dark as much as I see it a maturing of the themes already presented as main objectives for the characters. The love between Nodame and Chiaki is maturing by this trial.

Lord, They got Faust mixed up in this? Upon further reflection, I came to some similar conclusions, but the mood of the show is generally so upbeat, I was very surprised when it took such a dark and melancholic turn. I do appreciate the extra plot complexity from a scholarly point of view.

Thanks a lot! Your release is the best one out there, as they usually are. This is definitely the one I’m archiving. Too bad the karaoke is hardsubbed though. Your releases would be “perfect 10s” in my book if they were softsubbed (I hate karaoke with a passion, no matter how beautifully done they are). ^^;

To explain the Puck question: Nodame is giving herself over to the perv “milky” for her musical completion via performing…oppose to Chiaki who she feels she lost. For her- Chiaki playing with Rui so well was intimate stuff-was like an affair, being unfaithful which is why she feels empty and why she wanted to marry him…she figured she could not compete with the skill of all those musician’s like Rui’s in the future and in now…Rui. Chiaki as a pro needs to play with these highly skilled musicians. Nodame felt at this moment the only way to be secure with Chiaki would be as his wife…well that was a bust….so now she has nothing….she thinks…(if she only knew that Chiaki was seeing her and thinking of her and that Rui was doing her best to copy Nodame’s emotions for the music….Nodame wouldn’t feel this way….but) she feels she lost Chiaki. Therefore the devil in the person of “milky” who will “be her first man” if you read manga 236 does move the bargain up to messing with the music of Faust—the devil saying to Faust, I will give gratification to and stop earthly heart pain on earth and you give me your soul bit…parallel payed upon….Nodame/milky–to– Faust/devil both forget life pains for instant gratification. HOpe this is not as clear as mud to Puck says…..
