In reply to <a href="https://futureexpats.com/never-attend-expat-conference/#comment-42956">theda berdeaux</a>.

I have mixed feelings about them. Lots and lots of detailed information for some places/countries seems legit; other seems flimsy. They recently have been touting the Dominican Republic. I spent about a month a year in the DR for several years in a row and when I first was there I told myself this is paradise and I want to retire here. Several years later and many visits later I saw the place very differently. I wrote a comment to Kathleen after one of their email blasts about the DR conference last year.
I got a reply from one of their "women on the ground" there. She dismissed all my negative comments WHICH ARE BASED ON ALL MY TIME THERE LIVING AND HANGING WITH LOCALS OVER SEVERAL YEARS STRAIGHT, NOT IN RESORT OR GATED COMMUNITIES FOR 2 WEEKS LIKE SHE SAID SHE'D DONE with the most naïve counterpoints I'd ever heard, and it was so clear she was clueless on actual living in the DR. That this woman represented Live And Invest Overseas as a highly knowledgeable DR specialist and was assigned to answer my email with foolish and ignorant information was a joke.

Well, I'm not Linda, I'm Susanna. . .

We are no longer living in Panama - we really loved it there, but returned to the US because of family concerns. (Although we're planning to return to Panama next winter for a little while!)

We still have lots of friends there, who tell me that shopping and taking care of normal life tasks are easier than when we were there.

Yes, it's wise to rent first. You should go through a rainy season in the place you think you want to stay - if you're happy during the rainy season, you'll enjoy the dry as well.

All the best,
Susanna

Hi Linda,
I don't know if you are still accepting posts on this blog, but I am thinking of moving to Panama. I will be visiting in June, and I am so nervous but also so ready.
How is it there for you now, five years later? Have things gotten better? I am thinking of checking out Borquete, and perhaps living on the outskirts. I plan to definitely rent before moving permanently if I decide to. Thank you.

I have looked at the three areas that have been mentioned. We are not sure yet it may depend on the commute to and from the airport. We do not need to be
on the beach per say. Slow paced, not to the point that everything is closed as soon as the sunsets. Love to be near Museums, places to buy artifacts, good dining and a place to take a boat ride from shore to shore

Well, you might not be within walking distance of all the things you mentioned, but taxis and buses are a cheap and easy way to get around. And it shouldn't be hard at all to find a furnished rental during the summer, after all the snowbirds leave.

Do you have a particular region of the country in mind?

Greetings
Your views and suggestions are most helpful.
I would love to spend the summer of 2019 in
this beautiful and relaxing country with it's care free life style.
I may be traveling with my brother and BFF.
We will not be driving, and would love to experience and enjoy cooking, So farmers markets, in walking distance , visits to fairs, carnivals, we would difinitely
need internet access.

Hi there- I’ve been looking everywhere for info on renting to eventually buying in Panama and just came across your posts. We aren’t coming until next Jan/feb but want to start finding little areas to come visit and las tablas sounds amazing. Here’s the thing - rent or buy? We are Canadian so we are up against our lesser dollar value, we would like to talk to you or other expats before coming if we could :)
