I have asked my family doc, the doc who treated me in the hospital for pancreatitis, and the ob-gyn. They all seem to concur that while it's less likely to be endo up as high as my pancreas, it's quite possible with my history. I need to do more research on fibroids. I don't know as much about them as I should. Obgyn said it was a small one, whatever qualifies as "small". The first endo surg. took all the pain away for about 7 years, but I still had the migraines. The doc says the hormone swings may be contributing to those, too. I just spoke to my sis tonight who had a hysterectomy a couple months ago for ovarian cysts that were fruit sized. She said after her recovery was complete, she felt 10 years younger. Said that while not having kids was kinda sad, feeling better was so worth it. She has a stepson. I also feel a bit better on that score too, having talked to my stepson and stepdaughter tonight. Knowing I have their support and love means the world to me. I think I just need to focus on the "what is" rather than the "what if's". Overall, I am a very blessed woman. I love, and am loved, and that's what's important in life. Thanks for responding! Just being able to talk about these things with someone who understands helps SO much!

Sorry to hear of your m/c. I had a D&C performed after I gave birth with 2 or 3 fibroids, one up to about 10cm at least, & I was worried about the D&C especially with a distended uterus after pregnancy but I was assured it would be fine & it was. I would still be concerned if there was a fibroid on the cervix as I would think that would affect access to the uterine cavity or if there were pedunculated fibroids on stalks. I think they can use ultrasound when doing the D&C to get an idea of the situation. Ask your drs for more reassurance.

Amy--What type of fibroid do you have? How long since your last period? What type of HRT? Did you take BC Pills when young? Do you eat conventional meat? I think there is something to the artificial things we have ingested over the years that cause the fibroids. And yes stress is a biggy. Have you considered trying "natural" hormonal balance? There is a good md/nd Dr. Susan Lark that has written a book "Hormone Revolution" and she has had good results with here patients on a variety of HRT, naturally and bio-identical. Yes the "wait until menopause" is uncertain and frustrating. I just keep trying to find as much info as possible and do to my poor experiences with conventional doctors, I will probably try everything on mine own naturally. I'm not having incontinence, constipation, pain--just flooding with the monthly cycle and some "discharge" during the month. Also, everytime I fly, when I land I get a mini gush of blood, sometimes more if it is closer to my period and also if I get stressed I bleed mid cycle. I was really stressed in May and was non-stop bleeding with flooding off and on when I tried the nettle/red raspberry leaf infusion that Susan Weed recommends and it worked. No mid cycle flooding, I can actually go through the month with just a panty liner.
Clair--the discharge is usually a semi-mucous clear-yellowish-pinkish color, smells a little like ammonium and usually about 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon in volume several times a day. I didn't know what this was and came across a mention of it on obgyn.net where I have found quite a bit of info on fibroids, but yet still the doctors couldn't elaborate on the discharge and I refuse to get stressed with the fear tactics that I believe the industry practices.

I am most happy that we have choices and we can make our own decision for our health. I hope for the day when all women of the world will have their own say of their bodies. I wish everyone well on their journey. Peace

Hi everyone - just thought I'd share my experience of Lupron as it's been mostly positive and I read so so many negative stories before i had the injections (I scared myself crapless before deciding to go with the injections anway).

I've had three of the one-month shots, except my drug is called Lucrin. Same drug, different name where I live. I had barely any shrinkage in the first two months and was pretty gutted, but three weeks later i had another scan and the fibroid had shrunk from around 10cm at the largest dimension, to around 8.cm. Taking into account that the other two measurements had some shrinkage too, that works out at about 40% less volume, which is awesome as far as I'm concerned.

I haven't had any of the moodiness or loss of sex drive I was worried about. The main symptom has been some crazy hot flashes throughout the day and night, which are annoying but easy to cope with as they only last a few minutes. I also have some muscle aches, particularly in my legs when I stand up after sitting down for a while, but that may not be related to the shots.

Other than that it's all been good and i may be able to have a laparoscopic myomectomy next week, rather than the big open abdominal myomectomy. I won't actually find out which I've had until I wake up, so please keep your fingers crossed for me ladies.

I hope all goes well with you if you're taking Lupron, please keep posting your experiences.

Thanks Amy - it's good to know this little lifeline website isn't going anywhere :-)

My op is scheduled for next Tuesday (17th). Like Agnes above, my doctor is hoping to do a lap myo, but with a view that it may have to be an open ab myo. I've also been on lupron for the last three months. It has shrunk the fibroid a little - the biggest dimension was over 10cm and it's now around 8.5. It doesn't sound like much but in terms of volume the shrinkage works out at nearly 40% so i'm pleased with that. Fingers crossed my doc can do the myo laparoscopically as i am dreading dealing with the large incision.

I have two questions. Firstly, did anyone have their incision glued shut? How did that go? Does it keep the wound closed effectively?

Also, I'm unfortunately a couple of stone overweight and have developed a rather impressive pot belly over the last year after comfort eating following a miscarriage. I'm worried the incision will be on the belly roll rather than below it, and that might make it difficult sitting down and moving about. Did anyone else have issues with the site of their incision? (I'm assuming not everyone has a flat stomach...)

I'm trying to stay positive and look past the initial physical problems with the op, and focus on the end result, but I'm finding it a little hard this week. Keep waking in the night a bit panicky. I'm assuming this is normal :-)

This site has been fantastic in helping me to prepare for the operation. Thanks so much to all you ladies for posting your experiences. I'll try to post asap after my op and share what happened.

Hope all of you are doing well and either healing up nicely, or waiting without too much worry.

Ladies, I need a pep talk. I had a really rough weekend. I went to my RE on the 5th (which was CD1) and we decided we should do a cycle of clomid/FSH with IUI. I felt so relieved to be free of all the temping/monitoring POAS etc. I felt so positive about putting this in someone else's hands and thought I could actually be pregnant before the anniversary of Avery's death this christmas, but I went in for my CD3 ultrasound and blood work so that I could start on the clomid that evening and they found a small cyst on my left ovary. Blood work confirmed it was producing estrogen so they cancelled our cycle this month. I am so frustrated and do not understand why my body is working against me so much. we will try naturally this month but DH has low morphology so not sure we will have much success on our own. It makes me want to scream and cry.... plus I am throwing a baby shower for my friend in two weeks. i am so happy for her, but it still hurts a bit and I feel incredibly guilty for feeling that way.

Had emergency surgery yesterday - finally. Heavy bleeding started in January and just kept getting worse. I was put on hormone pills and other pills none of which stopped the bleeding. I am 45 so everyone assumed it was menapause kicking in. Waiting to see a gyno was the worst part. After several trips to my doctor and waiting on tests to be done I was finally given a referral to a gyn in August with an appointment time for March - 6 months down the road. How could I continue like this for 6 more months?? Panic started to set in when I started to bleed heavily with huge blood clots which lasted 65 days (up to surgery day). When you have to triple pad yourself, constantly clean blood off the bathroom floor, put towels on the seat of your car and be forced to stay home for days at a time to ensure bathroom access I thought this wait time was ridiculous but our health care system is way overloaded. 3 trips to the emergency room because I thought I was hemorrhaging finally got me in to see the gyn this past Friday when he had a cancellation, and had surgery that same weekend. I was just relieved that finally someone was listening to how bad this was and how weak and tired you feel by losing so much blood. Surgery went well and I was home the same day. Feeling great today with only slight abdominal pain, but knowing I can get back to normal is well worth the surgery. Obviously I am now anemic and will work on getting the iron back up in my system. So ladies, thanks for this site where I realized I was not alone. Personal experience stories are the only way to go.

Feeling great today with only slight abdominal pain, but knowing I can get back to normal is well worth the surgery. Obviously I am now anemic and will work on getting the iron back up in my system. So ladies, thanks for this site where I realized I was not alone. Personal experience stories are the only way to go.

Hi girls, how s everyone?
Well i have a question for you: it s been 3 days a ve had a pulling-burning pain on my top left side and last night i was rubbing that side and it felt like i had the same scar i have on the ouside. It s like a long cord.Could it be the scar inside?it seems strange i can feel it and it s quite bumpy.I m soo scared of scar tissue.I know i m ovulkating these days (if everything is working well) so i m wondering if that s it.But still i see no reason to feel what i feel.I m going to wait 1 week and if it doesn t pass i will see a doctor. The thing is i need to find a doctor couse i just mooved to another country.I was hoping to not have to find one untill i got pregnant (hepefully in a few months when we start trying).Do you think it s normal to feel that pulling-burning kind of pain after almost 3 months from AM?

Jennifer,
I don't really know the answer to your question, but since you are worried and no one else has replied, I will tell you what I think... again take it with a grain of salt.

First, I seem to recall that when we are pregnant, the volume of our blood increases dramatically, so you should be able to have some blood loss and have the baby be just fine.

Also, it isn't as if the baby is bleeding, it was probably the fibroid or the uterus around it that is bleeding and unless it is bright red, it is probably left over residual blood making its way out of your body and you will probably stop spotting soon unless you start to bleed again.

Then, keep in mind that 'huge' amounts of blood is a very relative term. Any amount of blood loss when one is pregnant is horribly distressing... and what may seem to be a huge amount...maybe isn't. I'm sure they asked you to describe how much you lost and maybe it really isn't enough to cause a lot of concern to the docs. However, if it should happen again, try to find some way to measure the blood loss as the doctors will then have a much better idea of how serious the situation is.

I'm wondering if it was definitely the fibroid that caused the bleeding, and if they have any idea why?

Finally, i know I've read of other women with bleeding who go on to have perfectly healthy babies.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Agnes,

Yes the site was down but we got it up and working again (our Inquisitive Geek founder mysteriously disappeared in '07 and the domain name wasn't renewed...but Wordpress got it going for us). Glad to have you back!

I'm impressed that you only took 2 weeks off! Wow. You didn't really say how that went... was it hard? Do you have a desk job or are you on your feet a lot? Also, I may have asked you this before, but if you liked your doc, I'm interested in getting his name, as I live in the area too. Curious too, did he do a vertical or horizontal incision, and how long were you in the hospital? Best to you!

I had a miscarriage in January which is when my fibroids were diagnosed. After seeing a gynecologist & getting the green light to TTC again, we got a +ve in September. Unfortunatley my bHCG's and an ulrasound have confirmed that I had a missed miscarriage at 6 weeks. I am currently waiting for a D&C appointment or for my body to naturally empty the uterus. I've been unable to find an answer to this question: Is a D&C more difficult to perform because of fibroids? Is it more likely to be incomplete? If anyone has the answer I'll be very appreciative.

Period #3 and they've gotten progressively heavier. Boo. The IR's office wants me to have another cycle before I come in, but I have a script for an MRI, and appointment set up with the GYN "just in case".

lise, try signing up for the automatic updates again. The site was down for a month or two because our Inquisitive Geek webmaster mysteriously disappeared in 2007 and the site domain wasn't renewed or something like that. ( Wordpress was kind enough to keep it going, although we have no way to administer any parts of the site.) So just sign up for updates again... I think it should work - I'm getting mine.

Hi Is, fortunately, I am less symptomatic than I was, but not due to shrinkage. What took care of the bleeding was a hysteroscopic endometrial ablation (using a roller ball and a D & C) - which I highly recommend over other types of ablations.

There are several things I don't like about the "wait until menopause" approach:
1. no guarantee when that will happen, meanwhile the fibroids may continue to grow, you become (more) anemic with everything that brings (I feel your whole body is affected and it takes a long time to recover from anemia), not to mention the worry, the mess, other symtoms etc.

2. shrinkage assumes the woman is not going to use hormone replacement therapy, and while many women now opt to stay away from hormones now, some women who have especially bad menopausal symptoms may benefit from taking them - at least for a year or two - as I have chosen to do on and off.

3. while it is possible that one won't bleed as much following menopause (after all, I didn't bleed horribly the entire month, just during my period), it doesn't mean the other symptoms go away. They can still cause some incontinence, pain during intercourse, back pain, etc. My fibroid also makes me look a lot fatter than I really am (if it weren't for my fibroids, my pants size would be 14 instead of 18.

I still want to look around for a doc who will do the myo... but I still want to do some research.. (of course, meanwhile, I'm just getting older!)

Find out how much fibroids actually shrink... I read somewhere that they actually shrink very little. Mine haven't shrunk at all, even when I was off of HRT for almost a year.

So, if your main complaint is the bleeding, definitely look into the endo ablation. Best to you!

Hi,

I'm 31 weeks pregnant. I have two fibroids, one small and the other was about 8cm at 20 weeks. This is my second pregnancy.
I had these two fibroids during my first pregnancy. My large fibroid grew to 12cm and caused me pain most of the way through my first pregnancy. I went on to give birth to lovely little girl who is now 18 months, so we are hoping that we will have the same outcome. Good luck to all of you with fibroids. I know it is very worrying and uncomfortable but i just wanted to say that sometimes the outcome can still be positive.

Hi all 12 days after my "hot water" ablation, d & c n fibroid removal. I was to start my period yesterday and started spotting, was awoken n the middle of the night with the most horrific cramps of my life (I have had 2 kids naturally and these beat labor pains 10fold). I feel horrible bleeding today all beit not as bad as normal... Will these cramps ever let up, I was forced to start on the vicodin I hadn't touched since the day of my surgery.... Help I'm miserable, I'm beginning to think I'd t'e the heavy bleeding over this pain.... Any one else have these horrific cramps their 1st period post ea???
