You’re welcome. I don’t know what Standard Domestic it–is it possible you’ve selected UPS instead of USPS? I have USPS set up as my default, and when I go to print a label, next to “Service type” I see the option for “First Class Mail Parcel” in the drop down menu, and no option for “Standard Domestic”.

Thank you so much for the valuable information. I have a question..In PayPal, I do not see First Class as an option to specify for “Shipping Method” I do see “Standard Domestic”is this the same thing as “First Class Domestic?

Hi, Thanks for this post – I have a question. When I download my paypal history onto openoffice spreadsheet it looks like ‘mishmash’ and there are no values in the tax column. I am really just interested in finding out how much sales tax I collected each 3 month period. Is there something obvious to you that I’m doing incorrectly? Thanks for your time and any help you can provide.

You only collect sales tax from NY buyers if you are only selling from NY & only registered in NY. Have you seen this page for some basic sales tax info & a link to lots more help for NYers? I’m only just starting my Etsy shop, haven’t put any items up yet. I’m in New York, do I only collect sales tax from other New Yorkers? Or do I need to tax for out of state as well?

Sales tax is always due on taxable goods, even if the seller doesn’t collect it so it’s not really more than if the buyer purchased from out of state.

If the seller doesn’t collect it, the buyer is responsible for paying Use Tax (which is generally the same rate as sales tax) directly to the state–as far as I have seen that’s true for all states with sales tax.

In NYS sales tax rates are based on where the buyer takes possession of the goods--for in person sales that's where you hand the goods off, for items mailed to the buyer it's where the package is delivered. See number 2 here for a link to that info on the state's website: NYS Sales Tax FAQ, part 1 NYS also requires us to accurately show sales tax on the payment receipt--like the one the buyers get from Paypal. A quick (and maybe dumb) question. Why can’t you operate your Etsy transactions like a craft show transaction? Charge x for the item, and if it is being shipped to NY, send a revised invoice that shows the breakdown of base price + sales tax = x. I know this means the seller earns less because tax is included in the listed price, but it’s more consistent for the buyer. I feel like with the options on Etsy, buyers may be less prone to buy and ship in-state if there is tax on top of the listed price.

Were you reading it here: Can I ship jewelry through International First Class Mail? See the "Valuable Articles" part about what constitutes jewelry--many sellers are shipping what is considered costume jewelry/fashion accessories and not fine jewelry which is where restrictions usually come in. Some of the info on USPS about what is restricted/prohibited is arguable--sometimes you go to the country's website and find that there really isn't a restriction on items USPS says are, or it gives you more specific details.

So I read in another post that you ship jewelry. When I went to the USPS manual you linked to and then to Great Britan, jewelry is a prohibited item. Do you ship jewelry to GB and if so, what do you do special to make it happen? Thanks.

When we use the “Click N Ship for Business” downloadable program it prints out the label with the customs form on 1/2 sheet of paper–no need to add a separate name and address.

That label with the customs form looks just like the bottom half of the page from the USPS Web Tools® system (online customs form generator) but the online one doesn’t say what class of mail you are sending nor the postage required on it, so I think that as long as you adhere the whole bottom half of the page you’d be fine–I suggest calling the 1-800-ASK-USPS number to confirm though, since I haven’t asked them about that. Be sure to save the customs form info/number for your own records in case you need to try and use it to track down your package/need to prove it was mailed. (Save the PDF so you can print it again, take a photo of it, make a scan of it…)

Silly question. Does the custom form I print and stick on count as an address label or do I still need to write the address and return address seperately on the package?
