We have to override the default alloc method as the default alloc method will assign a new memory location for the instance every time. This will mean you would end up returning a new instance of the object and the old instance would be left holding valuble resources (including the information you stored in it). You would also have an issue of the old instances taking up memory in the app that you would not be able to release as the pointer will be set to the new instance.

By overriding the alloc method we can tell the app to return the already allocated object instead of creating a new instance (unless one doesn't already exist). In effect the alloc method stops working as an allocate method and becomes more of a get object method instead
