My grandfather lived in Brandling Street, Roker, Sunderland and was close friends with the Bell family. I had read James Herriot books from being a teenager yet it was only when I was given the Biography by his son did the link come to light. My Father read the book and upon looking at the pictures he wondered what their family friend Stan Bell was doing in one of the pictures - the wedding one I recall.

Its a small world, as they say.

Although he went by Alf Wight, his full name is James Alfred Wight, or Jim Wight. Also, both his father and grandfather were named James.

it says on your site: Jim Wight, AKA, James Herriot was born today, Oct 3, 1916.

This is incorrect, I have just read a biography on James Herriott (the main characters name) who is based on ALF Wight the real person and vet who wrote the books. Jim Wight is his father!

It was wonderful, meeting dogs in Herriot's book. Plenty of interesting information. Knowing, 'The Lord God made them all....' so you do have knowledge of the greatest Book ever written.... and children are encouraged to read these books, it is disgusting to see God's name used in swearing. Surely you know, "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.".....God's very instruction. The first chapters were thrilling....then came the foul language...making the reader wonder if there is a church in Yorkshire. I will not pass this book on to my grandchildren....shameful to think that the Lord God made all these animals and you give Him nothing but sinful way to use His name. Profanity is the effort of a feeble mind to express itself forcefully. When snow falls and the cold of winter keeps my feet off the trail, I will go through the book and blot out every name of God you lacked reverence for.

Just watching the film on ITV4 and it reminded me of some of the stories my dad told me about Alf. You see my dad and granddad was one of Alf´s real clients..We strongly suspect that the Copfield boys, Frank and George refered to in one of books was in fact my dad (George Francis) and my uncle Tom.

My dad bought his first car off Alf and included in the deal was a driving lesson, from Leyburn to Scarbourgh and back! I don´t think my dad ever told Alf that he too really wanted to be a vet, but as his dad couldn´t afford to send him to vet school it was a non starter.

I have just read that Alf´s son Jim went off to be a vet in Staffordshire, if only he knew that is where my dad ended up and in fact where I was born. My uncle Tom however saw out his last years in Thirsk (he loved the horses)..

I wonder if Jim ever reads this site, and if he ever remembered visting Park House Farm?

I purchased a set of 4 or 6 books in a decorated box (I believe) years ago, approximately in the early 1970's. I loved the books but made the mistake of loaning them to someone and never got them back. For the life of me I could not remember the title of the books until I met my nephew's girlfriend yesterday who is a veterinarian and the moment I described the books as being hilarious and sad that were written by a veterinarian, she immediately said "All Creatures Great and Small". What I would like to know if that series is available and where I can find it.

Sincerely,

Myrna L. Sills

I have enjoyed reading the above article on James Herriot. I have read all his stories several times and have enjoyed his gentle ways with people. I imagine what makes him so likeable is that so many of us fans can identify with his strengths and weaknesses. James can bring the simple aspects of everyday life into view and make one believe that they are sitting among his characters as if they were sharing their joys and sorrows along with them. I have farmed and I eventually became an educator. I live in rural Winona, Minnesota, a area much like what James describes in the Dales. I applaude people like James Wight who can help us to see the best in humanity. August Thurmer

Last week we visited Dr. Herriot's surgery in Thirsk United Kingdom. WE chose to visit the Yorkshire Dales just because of his books! We took a 40th wedding anniversary trip to England and Scotland...staying at the Orangery in Marske UK. We have been fans for a long time. I am sad he no longer walk this earth,

Thank you for this site! I didn't know any of this.

I turned the 50's corner some years back and when I recently found myself chair bound with pneumonia I picked up the James Herriot series. I can't tell you how much I look forward to my daily reading. I get to be outside vicariously but almost palpably, I laugh out loud and and delight in every anecdote.

The more I read, the more I am awed by his skill as a writer. Like a painting, a story has to have focus, and everything in the painting, or story, has to lead the viewer, or reader to that focus which i turn highlights the setting sending us back to all the details, which of course lead us again to the focus and around we go, we don't want to stop, they have succeeded.

This man is a Master story teller much like Norman Rockwell whom I consider to be much more than an illustrator, he also is a Master story teller with a paint brush as his medium. The two remind me of each other not just because they both lift our spirits while never sugar coating life, but also because they are both Master story tellers; they are also greatly underestimated, in my opinion.

These are not just cute animal stories, they're beautifully told slices of life, great classics as far as I'm concerned. I am gratified to hear that our author loved his job because nothing else could have imparted such added richness and dimension to his wonderful books.
