Kids TV Shows I Love and Why

As a parent of 3 kids, (ages 5, 3, and 1) I tend to watch a ton
of kids shows. If you’re a parent, you’re likely to know the
list I’m about to rattle off from the Nick Jr channel.

The Backyardigans
Yo Gabba Gabba
The Wonder Pets
Go Diego, Go
Dora The Explorer
Jack’s Big Music Show
Oobi
Ni Hau Kai Lan

My wife and I are pretty happy with how most of these shows teach
our kids, but I’ll bring up a couple of strange things we’ve noticed
about some of the shows that parents should be aware of.

Oobi – when my wife and I first saw this show, we were horrified.
Oobi and Grandpoo and the other characters speak in a truncated
version of english, and we were intensely worried that it would
stunt our kids’ language skills, but they absolutely love the show.

For months, we refused to record the show on our DVR, but we eventually
gave in and recorded a few, and the kids to enjoy the show. We told
our oldest daughter that Oobi doesn’t speak properly, and she reminds
us of this everytime she watches the show, so our trick worked.

The Wonder Pets – are you Sewious? Who let Ling ling or whatever the
duck’s name is on the show when the actor has a speech impediment?
Now THIS show did cause some damage when our eldest first watched the
show, and my wife and I stopped her from watching it for over a year,
because she started talking using a lisp and not speaking properly.
It’s a wonder the show doesn’t have lawsuits against it for teaching
kids to speak with a lisp!

Yo Gabba Gabba – at first, we thought the show was a mess, but it
has high energy and our kids really love it. Even though the show
doesn’t have the best graphics and is very home-made, it teaches
kids good values, gets them physically active, and now we love it.
Yoooo Gabba Gabba!

Jack’s Big Music Show – this was a fantastic show when it first came
out – it had tons of great music, it showed kids how to solve problems,
and more. Over time, it did attract some strange C or D-level musicians,
some of whom looked like homeless people, but all in all it was and
remains a good show.

The Backyardigans – our all time favorite. I swear I have memorized
every song and line of dialogue from well over 60 episodes. I used
to hear the haunting opening song in my head while trying to sleep
for months on end, but my wife and I really love the show. The music,
stories, dancing, everything is exceptionally well-done and the
show is very watchable for adults.

There’s so much more to talk about in regards to these shows and
more, but I wanted to give you a parent’s objective feelings about
the shows and to say, overall, Nick Jr’s programming is good for
kids and parents would be well advised to have their kids watch
some of the shows they provide.
