Yeah, the square is off. He did several squares, so perhaps there's one that is more geometrically sound?

I'm not sure what the deal is with museum descriptions and placards. Some have lots of information but go too far and try to tell you what to think and feel and it all ends up sounding like BS. Then there's the other route, where you're supposed to come up with your own interpretation and people feel lost. It's difficult to explain a work like this, which involves a silly amount of explanation to make sense of, on a sign that is short enough that folks will read. A damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't thing.

Thanks for reading this whole thing!

Peanut Gallery Comment - The square seems a bit off. Someone should have given him a ruler or a t-square. :)

More Serious Comment - I think that the great failing of so many art galleries and museums is a lack of explanation behind each work or period. Tell me why each piece is important and on display. Without any background, a piece like this is rubbish. I can say, 'I guess it's modern' without any real understanding, but that's about it. With some background, I can at least appreciate it for what it is.

When I visit a science museum or natural history museum, the exhibit designers assume that I do not know anything about what I am looking at. It would help if more art museums took the same approach.

Jon, I really like it and that is not a prejudiced remark just because you are my talented son. The bomber bird has a lot of whimsy a hint of WWII (so the smoking is appropriate) and the blue outlines bespeak of the wild blue yonder. Keep up the good work! xxoo
