Your observation is mildly off the mark, ACTA is primarily a treaty regarding counterfeit goods e.g. those "Rolex" watches sold by shady customers in large city subway stations. As to the psychological manipulation you are very close to the mark and sadly there is nothing new in this for politicians.

Another recent example of such manipulation is in regards to the hotly debated inclusion of contraception coverage by employers under government writ(force). Those opposed to this are immediately painted as being extremist by the media and politicians turning the , in my view, rather simple stance of "I don't want to pay for something optional (unlike say food or shelter you don't really need contraception to survive) which is in opposition to my Religious rights and freedom" into the monstrous sounding "We hate women, they are only here for baby making, and all contraception should be banned."

The latter of course is not at all what the opposition is saying. (and let us not get into THAT debate here thank you it was merely an illustration of the psychological manipulation mentioned by Gaara)

First, my opinions in regard to SOPA/PIPA: It was shoved forward like a bat outta hell. There was even one instance where they were holding a meeting to confirm whether or not it would be official, and they openly stated they would not allow opposition to the bill to have any say in the meeting or even take part in it. If they were going for the stealthy approach, to make everyone unaware that they really wanted this to pass, they were doing it wrong. Way wrong.

Another thing, not really an opinion, but the guys who were pushing for it to pass in congress even admitted that they don't use the internet. The old guys up in congress pushing for this bill admitted that they basically don't even know how the internet works, as a result of that admittance.

SOPA/PIPA and ACTA are all touted around with a heroic symbol, though. To my knowledge, SOPA/PIPA was basically to be anti-piracy, but was really vague one what specifically could be DMCA'd, reported, taken down, and who could be sued for what.

As for ACTA, well, don't quote me on this, this is just a rumor I heard when I first heard about ACTA: Apparently it was initially pushed forward as an anti-child porn bill. Again, just a rumor I heard, don't quote me on it, but imagine the implications if that's true. Basically, Congress puts for internet restricting bill with an anti-piracy label stamped on it, opposition might be seen as pro-piracy. So imagine if the new bill had an anti-child porn label stamped on it? Who wants to openly defy something that claims to fight child porn, right?

That's what this has possibly come to though: Lying to the public and saying what they're doing is for the good of everyone while simply wanting control

So they are remaking The Munsters now? It has been shown that TV show remakes usually fail, so how about using just a tiny bit more creativity and try crossover remakes that would combine two or more old shows? I give a list of amusing or horrifying suggestions in a post at http://www.ragingwisdom.com/?p=704 Enjoy!

This is absolutely ridiculous, of course it's a treaty.. by definition a treaty is an agreement between nations. Treaties require congressional oversight per the US Constitution! How else can lawmakers craft and enforce laws in accordance with it! A nations public has a right to know what its representatives have agreed to on their behalf!

Expect a rant on this monstrosity on my next installment!

I disliked the last Abrams Trek movie. It felt just like most other Hollywood reboots: the makers saw maybe a token episode or a series of clips, then based their movie on what they thought should be kept. What was kept ended up being mere stereotypes of the original cast, and the characters they played.

Then there is the bad science so bad you cannot possibly suspend disbelief. You can read about it even from people that loved the reboot.

When you break it down the Trek reboot sucks for all the same reasons most other reboots do: Hollywood is just being its usual risk-averse self pumping out bad remakes because they don't want to risk losing money on something original. The fact that the writers, directors and producers can't bother themselves to actually watch the original all the way through adds insult to injury.

While the defeat of the legislation is a good thing, it was a small victory only, in that all we managed to forestall was the codifying of existing powers.
