Garry, you mentioned this piece at the PVTU meeting – nicely written. It had me searching around, as things like this tend to do, for the river and the pond on Google Maps, the Crabtree book (apparently not available, but Youtube has some reference to the TV show.). It brought back the memory of my grandfather who took me fishing as a 6 or 7-year-old; he used a fly rod then, which I later “inherited” and somehow over the years, lost it as life intervened and I had drifted away from fishing.

I’m new to the group and I’m sure we’ll meet at some point. Jim

Dear James,

Thank you for sharing this outstanding essay.

My father also built a “Z-Box” and I’ve recently taken up learning its backstory, even if I don’t know how to play the thing. (That’s what led me to your essay).

I have a feeling his experience was pretty similar to yours, and so was his playful spirit. I can’t know, but it feels like your story is probably pretty similar to the story my pops would have told me had we ever talked about it.

I hope to develop a performance piece on this theme, and imagine ways I might incorporate parts of your vibrant telling into whatever I come up with, eventually – with your permission, of course.

We’re truly sorry about the delay. It looks like results for the fiction contest will have to wait until 2021. It’s been a tough year, we have a very tiny staff, and we fell behind. We’ll announce winners in 2021 and publish a new issue with the winning entries.

Well that read was disturbing. Cultural sensitivity and travel can only take you so far. I am also not be a big fan of this tradition. It is also traditional in some places to hang out with the dead or go for picnics at cemeteries. Both weird western traditions.

With regards to the penis flick and such…in the context of the culture it would seem that the rural areas of Vietnam still have old traditions. This is an example of were the actions were likely not meant as erotic or sexual. Strangely enough it could have even been an honor that we from the States would rather do without.

For example in Adhara Telugu they also have a similar tradition.

What a fantastic step back in time. Lovely memories. I am just doing some research on the River Clyst as I live upstream in Broadclyst, a keen fisherman and I have recently formed an Environment Group. I am hoping to provide the community with some information about the river that flows through their parish and this historical insight is very useful. Perhaps one day I will wet a line in the ‘Clear Stream’ and see if I get a pull! Thank you for this wonderful piece.

Loved your story. I have five sons, didn’t have the nerve to leave them until they were all in school, then taught school for 49 years. They survived to adulthood, but I’m feeling my age–I blame it on all those middle schoolers whose parents didn’t properly raise them.
