The building has a facade similar, albeit less ornate, to that of the ex-Commonwealth Bank in Armidale. So I agree it probably was a bank. The Armidale building, which is also painted pink, has recently sprouted "test" patches of new colour indicating repainting may be imminent. Perhaps some photo-blogger should record the pink incarnation before it disappears?

Wasn't it wonderful to be able to type commands on a keyboard and see the results on the screen. The VT-100 had the ability to create screens allowing text entry in fields. The VT-100 probably has less processing power than a current washing machine and the mainframe would have less than a cars engine management system.

So, somewhere in the basements of the University of Houston in Houston Texas circa 1973, there was a real computer person such as yourself. I had no idea. At the time, I was punching my research data into cards (in a small room with several card punching machines), bundling them up with rubber bands, and giving them to my major professor. Some time later, I was presented with printed data on a stack of folded paper, perforated at the folds. I would guess the size of each sheet was 12X18. From whence it came, I was oblivious. It was all very mysterious to me, but I was very grateful I did not have to do the statistical computations myself...I wonder if graphics were even possible at that time. I doubt it. I do remember the excitement I felt when I looked at the sheets.....I hadn't had to do the number crunching!!! There it all was!

Hope that you get up and running again quickly Gordon.

Snowed here in sunny Suffolk, UK again this morning. It has been a really long miserable winter, the coldest for a long while. But unusually for cold winters a serious of depressions rather than high pressure areas have been around.

I used to be a computer operator back in the early 80s and the line printers drove us nuts. The folding and stacking mechanism would often fail and by the time the printer eventually jammed, the hood would be filled with several hundred pages of crumpled fanfold. Such fun to smooth it out and refold.
