This headline to his article is misleading. I didn’t get the impression from reading Smith’s full article that the iPhone has “a lot of flaws”. Even so, some people may think the iPhone has a lot of flaws. The iPhone won’t address everybody’s needs, and Apple knows this. To paraphrase Steve Jobs, “We try to make great products for people that we would want to use ourselves, killing some features and adding others. If people like Apple products, people will buy them. If they don’t, they won’t. They will vote with their wallets. It will all work itself out.” Enough said.

Let’s face it. Tim Cook is a mediocre manager of mediocre people. Steve Jobs would never have tolerated ‘D-listed’ people joining the organization but Tim Cook not only recruits them but compensates them richly for sitting on their asses doing nothing.

One thing’s for sure, if one of Steve Jobs’ visionary strengths was in populating the bench with talented people, Tim Cook stands in direct contrast to that. Tim’s more like a GIGO type of person. Garbage in, garbage out.

The Steve Jobs legacy of excellence is being eaten away at the core one by one until nothing will be left.

I swore I’d never return to these dick-rich forums but, like a fool, just can’t seem to stay away.

As one who’s married to a teacher who works with kids everyone else has given up on and gets results, I know how hard she works but how much she loves that what she does makes a REAL difference, both to the kids and their community. How many of you can say that?

Oh, and you fine Christian folk would still be working for Chinese wages if your grandfathers hadn’t unionised. Be grateful to them and shut your whining.

Despite being a dedicated UK Apple user (since 1990), I do not follow the Apple news as closely as dedicated followers of this site.
So I was completely unaware of John Browett;s appointment. All I can say is “wow! Are you kidding?!!?” If you don’t believe me come over to London and browse round a typical Curry’s/PC World (or what’s left of them (Dixon’s have long since shut up shop, and the other brands aren’t far behind).
I cannot imagine two retail philosophies more opposed tham Curry’s and Apple.
Shelf after shelf of crap, piled high with more “money off” stickers than a supermarket at Christmas with assistants (if you can find one) that would struggle to work the Macdonald’s drive by window.
I could go on, but I am too shocked at this appointment.
(Although here’s a tip; if any US reader is coming over to the UK for Wimbledon tennis in the next couple of weeks, pop into the Wimbledon PC World. They’ve got some iMacs on display, two in fact, both loaded with Leopard – yes I do mean Leopard – but don’t ask the assistants, for all they know the OS might as well be called “Kangaroo!!)

All I hope is Tim Cook knows what the f**k he is doing.

Apple’s executive compensation is how all business should be run. Apple execs work without contract at the pleasure if the Board of Directors. This means they have no golden parachute which will pay out unnecessary millions in cash should they be terminated (e.g., Mark Papermaster).

In 2011, Tim Cook was paid $900,000 in base salary. Other senior execs earned $700,000 each in base salary. They may all earn up to their base salary in bonuses if four target metrics (set by the Board) are met. For cash payments of $1.8 million and $1.4 million, respectively. All other bonuses are equity (stock) which generally vest in the future. This is done to a) encourage longevity at Apple and b) keep from paying huge bonuses to “bozos” who are terminated.

My base salary is under $40,000 per year, so $1.8 million seems like a huge sum compared to my income. However, I am not a CEO. To compare to other CEOs, Rex Tillerson at ExxonMobil made $6.8 million in cash while While John Watson at Chevron made $5.6 in cash. Gerald Arpey of American Airlines only made $669,646 in cash (base salary, no bonus), but they filed for bankruptcy. Profitable Southwest Airlines CEO made $1.4 million in cash. Walmart chief Michael Duke made $5.1 million cash and struggling JC Penney’s outgoing CEO, Myron Ullman was paid $1.5 million in cash with no cash bonus for 2011. Even AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson (his picture should be next to Steve’s definition on bozo, IMHO) made $5.4 million in cash—the T-mobile mess up cost him $2 million in bonuses—while retiring Verizon lead Ivan Seidenberg made $6.04 in cash for only working part of the year.

I think Apple is doing things right in the way they pay their executives.

MDN : The problem with shareholders voting is apathy. It’s not that they think it’s a good idea to pay executives the millions but rather the voters are generally to lazy to vote. You do understand that if all shareholders would respond, these compensation packages would be trimmed? Even as AAPL shareholders we believe in moderation regardless of performance. And yes I understand that agreeing on a fair level of compensation is not easy but I doubt you would find any shareholders that believe that these packages are appropriate if you asked them. It’s just that most people are too lazy to vote. But that doesn’t mean that they approve. You just can’t fix stupid.

Something is wrong here. Has this Browett proven in any form to be invaluable for the company? Has he proven anything yet? What is his incentive for a superb performance if he gets that kind of payment anyway? And what does this kind of payment to the motivation of ordinary sales staff? Apple seems to be desperate, not aware of the fact that they are a premium company. A premium company for the time being.

Not everything that goes wrong is a scam. But I agree with you that many times the stock holders get reamed. It’s not confined to only those companies that we hate but to almost all companies. Remember the options back dating at Apple a few years back? It happens because there’s money to be made and people will often push until there’s push back. Stock holders are finally trying to have a vote in pay and compensation but the good old boys club makes it tough. And I’m a guy who believes in free enterprise and earn what you can. But clearly things are out of focus. It’s not that the money will put a company in the red but rather it’s just too much for shareholders to rationalize regardless of performance. I lean pretty far to the right politically and socially but even I have to draw the line somewhere. I’m not a fanboy. I think for myself. I try to approach things rationally. I don’t follow. We’re talking about companies here. They’re not our buddies. But it is our money.

Oh please. The teachers union is all about one thing……………money. They support school board members who will pass pay raises and continue the Cadilac benefits for teachers. Running for a school board position
without the teachers union’s support is nearly impossible. They funnel money to school board
candidates. It’s all about
money. It has nothing to do
with “the children”. Teachers work 8 1/2
months and have better
benefits and retirement
than the private sector.
Unbelievable! I know because my dad became a teacher after 30 years as an electrician. He said it was like retirement. He said he couldn’t believe how crooked the teachers union is! And how spoiled teachers are. Bitching all the time when they never had to really work a day in their life. He was embarrassed for the slugs. And it’s worse today.
