i founded a conference called Bootcamp Ventures back in 2006 where I taught Israeli startup companies how to present in front of investors, and brought investors to share their feedback on the presentations. Investor powerpoint presentations are a crucial part of the investment process. I have always wanted to create a Y combinator type of event here to help earlier stage startups and entrepreneurs attain their goals.

@jot Great stuff and I went through this comparison process while thinking about Springboard.

Springboard is much closer to the YC model since it's founders who are calling most of the shots (although the financing is via their company Red Gate Software, which they still own and run).

It's the closest thing to YC in Europe as far as I'm aware, and we focus on B2B Software teams (a little different to the consumer internet guys that seem to head to YC)

Couldn't have written this better myself. With YC it boils down to people who are passionate about building products. Addressing the question if the product makes business sense is something they are willing to put off. They can do that because like Jon points out the investment comes form a small team who has been there themselves.

Seedcamp often reminds me of 'Dragon's den'. It basically is a restructuring of the YC model to fit the needs of the investor. As nice as it is to have in Europe, it ends up doing a lot less than it perhaps can to invigorate the under layer of budding entrepreneurialism with little polish but is full of passion.

Eager to learn how BootCycle progresses!

Awesome to see your idea being realised Jonathan! I still remember that session you held in BarCamp March 2007 on this topic.

Best of luck with it!

Interesting post and comments guys. I think in the coming years in Europe, not just UK, we'll see more variery in investment models emerging. We built Seedcamp in a very thoughtful way to solve a few issues, leaving a few unresolved. We certainly hope others will tackle other issues. If we had tried to do boil the ocean, we would have failed. Good debate and gives us some food for thought!

I'm not sure. I mean it's a good idea, but I don't have a product that I need help with. However I would like to help others with advice around expediting product release.

Thank you all for your support! Really looking forward to seeing some of you on the 26th.

I'm working on a few rules of BootCycle, they're fairly strict but this is what I have so far:

1) At least 2/3 members of a BootCycle team have to be hackers* and they have to have ownership rights to at least 2/3 of the outcome.

2) BootCycle team members must commit to attending to at least 9 out of 10 weekly meetings.

3) All BootCycle teams have to demo on a Demo Day at the end of the 10 weeks - an interesting selection of demos means we can attract a high profile audience.

*Hackers being people that make things with technology. People that
can code HTML & CSS all the way through to people that can build
electrical and mechanical devices.

Let me know what you think and if you have any more suggestions.
