Great observation, Adam. I definitely think this was the desired effect from Google. Google and everyone else are moving towards location based results. To me, it's pretty evident in the design. The prominent red dots and star ratings are all designed to draw attention.

Doug - that is an excellent question. And one the study doesn't answer. I know a lot of people are clicking on the local search listings because I've seen the impact high rankings have had for a number of local businesses. But as far as quantifying "a lot" in terms of percentages of eyeballs or even percentages of people clicking on local search listings vs. organic results vs. paid ads, I haven't seen any data on that recently. I'll dig around and let you know if I find anything.

And sorry for the delayed response, your comment was marked as spam - guess WordPress know all about you! ;)

Adam you mentioned how Google AdWords ad and other results push the local listings even further down the screen, and how the people’s eyes gravitate toward the “3-Pack” of local results, but does that translate or correlate into clicks. For me personally you are right my eyes do drift there, however because there is no description, I rarely click on them. I do however pay attention to the reviews.

@Brian - You're right that is an interesting category though the survey did not include those sites separately. For this study they defined internet as "web only sources such as search engines, specialty-topic websites and social networking sites." Websites of local newspapers and TV stations were included in the numbers for newspaper and TV, not the internet.

In some of the data, they do mention locally focused sites like patch.com but lumps them in with bigger sites like Craigslist and Weather.com.

Was there any data on your local online news media? I know it's a new category, but in many suburbs and small towns, pure play local online news sites have been grabbing a huge audience. It's an interesting new category for many local advertisers.

Thanks for the post. i think exact match searches give more valuable and relevant result than broad match or phrase match. broad match will provide a huge list of keywords on same niche among them mostly are irrelevant. We should choose our keywords according to our need not according to traffic. for example let us suppose we are providing SEO services, then the keyword “SEO” has a huge amount of traffic but it may be useless when we are providing seo services in a local area. so we should always keep in mind these things when we are choosing keywords.
