Igor,

Thanks for the comment, but I think you missed the point somewhat.

What you say is correct, and as I mention above, I may even buy this lens again at some point, accepting it's shortcomings. I know that it's a great lens when used at a reasonable working distance. You don't need to convince me of this. But, I also wanted to use it at minimal focus distance with wide open apertures, and this lens with it's current design will not enable me to do that. This is why I took mine back.

At some point, I will probably pick up another copy, and just rule out the possibility of shooting close with it. I have plenty of other Canon lenses that will allow me to do that, without a trade-off in image quality.

Cheers,
Martin.

Hi,

I did my own review of this lens on the link above and found that I could not replicate the back focus issue or that it was so slight that in real world use it won't matter.

Let's assume all 50mm f1.2 L's have back focus as described above. Is it that much of a problem really? Some of Leica's most expensive glass (35mm Summilux ASPH and pre-ASPH) back focus but this is slight and something that if you know about it it can be easy to compensate. The overall qualities of lens can often make up for minor technical problems.

For instance, this 50 also exhibits strong CA at large apertures in fringes of scenes with high contrast which could also be seen as a problem but again you can compensate for it in post processing.

To finish off, there is a compromise in everything we do and I don't think you will ever find a perfect lens no matter what the money is you pay for it (Noctilux is a prime example of this). It is important to know what the issues are so that you can work the compensating for them in your photography workflow and then just get on with the shooting.

Cheers, I

I know what you mean. It does sometimes help to have things laid out for you like this.

I use these pieces of advice myself all the time. I just wish I could figure out how to squeeze another 4 or 5 hours out of each day though, without giving up sleep! :-)

Thanks Susan!

I am thinking of getting a panorama canvas of that done. It would certainly be something to see. The problem is, I have nowhere to hang it. Maybe I'll have to wait until I get my act together and arrange an exhibition. :-)

It was timely for me that this theme has been discussed right now. Since hearing the podcast again I have started trying to eat those frogs. The matters discussed here will assist me both professionally and personally. I kind of knew all this really, but sometimes one needs to be told as well.

Hi Martin,
I haven't heard the podcast yet. Instead I have spent some time enjoying your 60 marvellous photographs.
I am so grateful to be able to view your images; they appeal to me very much. Your panorama looks stunning! 1GB - but what a print it would make!
Susan.

Hi Martin...I have just found your site here and really~really enjoyed reading and looking at your photos...I am a novice, but LOVE Macro, and want to get those close up pics of the eyes etc. It was so great that you mention all the information you used, for someone like me that is learning, it's wonderful! I am still putting together all the pieces of this wonderful world of digital! :0) I also love action, and am impatient (LOL) so have been wondering since I am a novice, should I spend the extra for the L IS model 100mm Canon...after reading and looking at your shots here, it seems I would be enthralled with that lens. I am currently looking at the 70-200mm L lens w/o IS for action. I was thinking I could get this lens and the 100mm w/o IS for about what I wanted to spend without going broke, but wonder now, if I will be sorry and wish I had gotten what I wanted in the first place...Can you give me a little advise? :0) I'm just struggling with if I need the IS 100mm..or could do with the 100mm...at this stage of my photography abilities. Hope I haven't confused you...Thanks so much! Becca

Eric,

Thanks for the kind words about the portrait. I'll be releasing a Podcast on this shoot at some point soon.

Congrats on no longer shooting JPEG. That's an important step forward.

Linda,

You're very welcome! I'm pleased this article/podcast helped. Good luck with your own 2010 list!

Cheers,
Martin.

Thanks for the comments Peter and Michael!

Peter, actually I would say it's pretty obvious from there documentation, in that they clearly state that this tool is to create custom DNG/Camera profiles for use with Adobe Camera RAW or Lightroom. I would have ruled out Capture One from the start, as it uses it's own RAW processing engine. I agree that it would be nice to expand the usefulness of the product by supporting other RAW processing engines. Maybe that will come at some point down the road.

Michael, I know that they are available in Australia as a friend of mine has talked with the distributor there. If you are having trouble finding these Passports in Aus, let me know and I'll hook you up.

Cheers,
Martin.

Thanks for the comments Roy and Susan!

Roy, yes, you are right next to these guys. I do shoot with the 70-200 a lot, but I also use a 24-70mm as well. They really don't mind you being up close.

Susan, that's good to hear. I'm going to share some images in a 1D Mark IV review this week, and then share more in the coming weeks. I am not totally happy with my shots though, as I spend much more time with the group this year, as the tour was full to the max 12 people that I'd set. It was much more like work this year than the first two tours! :-)
