Well, that pretentious, "look what I'm doing with my life" tone you so accurately picked up on is exactly the same tone Jim and I would take with each other while sitting at the Cat & Fiddle on a Friday night. Perhaps I shouldn't have personal conversations with Jim on my own website. Point taken.

Thanks for bringing this up, Ted.

Boy Infidel,
For the amount of pretension and the "look what I am doing with my life" tone of your post, one can only assume that on top of being an atheist but this was probably written on a Mac too. Am I right? Of course I am.

Like you, Jim, knowledge is my number 1 passion, though not always my #1 focus!

Like many people trying to juggle a full time career, part to full time side business, family, and social life, knowledge sometimes has to take a back door. I believe that as long as I'm always learning something new in those areas of my life I can say that I'm still moving forward in my quest for knowledge and truth. Even if I'm not reading or studying I can always be thinking!

#2: Social Change. I'd like my skills and passion to be used to realize social change, even in the smallest way. I would have a hard time coping with a stagnant life, one unconnected to creating a better place for generations to come (as cheesy as that sounds). I have always had, for better or worse, a deep need for a purpose. I used to find that purpose in religion, but that didn't turn out so well!

I must create a purpose for myself in order to affect change, and I think the only way I can determine my purpose is through knowledge.

Great article Jim ... got me thinking :)

I absolutely agree that people should have religious freedom, but their freedom cannot infringe upon mine or upon the safety and happiness of others. It's a running theme on the blog. ;)

Theists live for death. We live for life. The immorality of religion strikes down another innocent life before it's time. The motivation for this behaviour is found in two areas.

1. Dogma. If you are taught that Jesus heals the sick, an you accept that premise, then the actions mentioned above take on a precieved noble attribute of devotion, rather than a sickening display of outright child abuse.

2. Control. Religion is used as a big stick that families whom cannot police themselves without the morality lifted from the pages of the bible. A sick child getting better without help from doctors cements religious truth for every member of the family, thus freeing the family from worrying about teaching their children about why bad things happen for real, and all sorts of realities that are considered taboo under the protective envelope of the church.

Bang out article, Jim.

You said it, Jimmy! Freedom for wackadoos in regards to everything except causing harm to another being. Sounds reasonable...And to the parents, NEVER just pray for healing. Take some control! How about a little fire, people?
