James, glad it was of help. I was pulling my own hair out before I figured it out, and I can’t afford to do that these days :)

Andrew, I think you aren’t typing in the correct path as the error message mentions your home directory. Type in exactly what is in the post and you should be fine.

I seem to have a problem with the tutorial — probably because I’m not a Terminal expert. When I enter both the sudo vi or sudo open it asks for my password and then tells me /Users/Andrew/“/Applications/XAMPP/etc/httpd.conf” does not exist. What am I doing wrong?

I asked as I actually tried to achieve this using Zend Framework which would need the root folder to be set to public, so I am wondering if …/$1/public would work which doesn’t as $1 is returned empty with this…

Hi Oliver,
$1 should be at the end of the path. And that will be the virtual sub-domain to be used. If you’re wondering, it isn’t set-up for sub-sub-domains.

If you see that screen at all, then something is still wrong. I can only guess that paths are not set right.

About 1 and 2, I would always recommend that you create a separate folder outside of XAMPP’s dir structure to store your dev web sites in, it just makes things simpler. You could even put it in dropbox and develop on any machine. For me, I put them in a folder called lsites in my home folder. l is for local, plus it keeps it short.

About 3, I usually keep the username the same and do not set a password for the master MySQL user. This comes from borking up my XAMPP installations on Windows or OSX every time I did.

And thanks for leaving the comment, I am sure it helps out others in similar situations to yours.

Additional question:

When trying to achieve “root /home/domains/whatever/public/$1/somedir;”

$1 is returned blank so setting ‘somedir’ as a deeper root directory isn’t working?!

Any hint? :-)
