Reminds me of William Law, who was one of the fathers of the holiness movement in the 18th century. He said we allow frivolous activity to fill our days because we don’t have a solid intention to devote the entirety of our lives to Christ. He advocated eliminating the frivolous not because it was sinful but because it did nothing to enhance a person’s commitment to or service for Christ. Challenging, radical thinking for an entertainment-saturated culture.

Amen. I went to my first Ash Wednesday service this year and it was really powerful. I started researching the history of Lent (and specifically Ash Wednesday) last month and I found that the focus of the season really is mourning over our sin and rejoicing that a Savior came to take our place. This is the first Lent that I’ve given something up and it’s definitely been a new, and much more spiritual season for me.
