I agree. The technology vendors and consultants who sell the magic/silver bullet approach to anything, including and I would say especially KM don't do anyone any favours, but those organizations that are gullible enough to believe them are just as bad. We all want something for nothing and in the case of KM technology, there has to be a strong understanding of the requirements and expectations of the organization and appropriate time and efforts put into picking the right one to support the KM activities.

Maybe I'm not the lone voice in the wilderness I thought I was ;)

Hi Stephanie,

I would guess that ultimately the disdain for KM technology partly arises because adopting technology can become a "tick-box" exercise: "Have we got that KM system in yet?" "Yes." "Mission accomplished – let's move on."

This hasn't been helped by the carpetbagger KM consultants (and more recently social media software suppliers) who sell the magic bullet approach of technology to organisations.

Ultimately if you don't have a strong understanding of the objectives of KM and the specific goals of your organisation in the KM space, then technology will be a crutch rather than an enabler.

Thanks for your comments Halan, I agree we do need to do something about the reliability of text information that is available on the web. A big part of the problem, in my opinion, is that people blindly believe things just because it's in text (or in an image/video), and don't look any further from proof that the original source is reliable.

That was one of the things I liked about Howard's model, he points that out as a critical part of being literate in the 21st century.

Congratulations its a very interesting topic, that mention lot of challenges on current era we live in, I think that some efforts should be spent on mechanisms that ensure or at least mitigate text authenticity trustworthy. On my humble opinion its getting more and more critical nowadays, where lot of informational can be spread around. I would mention Crowdsourcing growth as something exceptional but we need to watch out points above described.

Hi Stephanie, The definition I have been using for the last few years is that collaboration is the achievement of results impossible to accomplish independantly. I like this definition as it clearly distinguishes between communication and collaboration. It also puts focus on the end-result and value. I talk more about it here...

Loved this Ted Talk http://www.ted.com/talks/tom_wujec_build_a_tower.html, he talks about collaboration and design and has some interesting results. The talk also reminded me of the Knoco Bird Island http://www.knoco.com/bird-island.htm workshop; something I am now qualified to deliver.
