I'd like to point out the DotNetNuke now has a ton of tools for a RESS implementation:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/EntryId/3194/Mobile-APIs-in-6-1.aspx

Up to the module developers to take advantage of them now.

We're looking at using some of the schemas from schema.org to make standard content smarter for our new, in-house CMS. It's an interesting struggle.

Yes, I should say "browser", not "device". Or maybe even "User agent". However, my message is still that too much responsibility is put on the "User agent". To enable true "user agent independence" of any kind of content we need to make the entire value chain (and the content it self) more intelligent. Meta data is key. Today, content is stupid too (Note2self: need to update my illustration). Imagine that the content knows its limitations, possibilities and its real value in different contexts.... (oh... that's fluffy). Anyway, I miss initiatives from the CMS vendors of the world to make this happen. To get there, however, there is no way you can do this without some server side magic. WURFL or DeviceAtlas is a good start, but need to evolve too. We need tools and data to make the value chain smart.

A thoughtful and mercifully dogma-free article. Although I'm still learning a lot about responsive design, I've been convinced some sort of server-side processing would be necessary. Great ideas and some useful references to follow up as well, thank you!

Great article. I'm all for pushing better server/client communication, and have attempted to get this addressed with WHATWG but net a lot of resistence.

Also, one of the nain reasons i built http://adaptive-images.com was to address your final points: getting this stuff automated on the server so it is zero effort to use. I'd like to see further improvements in responsive asset creation and delivery much in line with your blog post.
