A very insightful and sensible blog post. Thank you.

In some use cases the properties (or capabilities) a developer cares about don't just relate to the browser, they also relate to the physical device and the operating system. For example; video, analytics or app stores.

BTW <a href="http://51degrees.mobi" / rel="nofollow">51Degrees.mobi</a> obtains many of the browser features using a human facilitated set of client side feature detection web pages.

So far its working like a champ. I integrated it into EngineAPI and have been having the library people hit it with all their mobile devices and its working fine.

I sent you an email it modifications to the code to fix some problems I was seeing.

I just updated this project will better support for devices and a few boolean attributes like "isMobile" and "isTablet." Not sure the latter will be terribly accurate/useful but I figured I'd throw it in just in case. Let me know if you run into questions or concerns during testing.

Excellent.

I've not been happy with the way we've been detecting in EngineAPI. I'll test with this likely add it into EngineAPI for the upcoming 3.0 release.

Thanks.

Regarding "a sampling and/or confidence metrics that could be used to re-test browsers?" we (yiibu) simply count the number of times a profile appears and take the one that is most likely to be correct. It's by no-means perfect, but it does leverage the perceived 'wisdom of crowds'. ;)

Also, the idea of a 'central repository' of profiles is really intriguing. My database chops simply aren't up to the task, but would really love to help out making this possible. In many ways it would allow us to crowd source an open device dB with relevant, tested device properties - instead of simply relying on commercial and/or community contributed (often ill-defined and open to interpretation) data.

@anthony-

i should add a note about that. it'd be very simple to add that to the <code></code> that gets built to be the snowflake. for our purposes the really simple look matched the video but it would be nice to have something that looked a little bit more like a traditional snowflake ;) thanks for the suggestion.
