For advertisers relying on phone calls, or where phone calls is over 20% of the overall lead volume, call tracking is a necessity.

You can't optimize your SEM campaigns properly without keyword level call tracking since you don't know what's been driving your conversions.

In White Shark Media we've experienced up to 3 times as many calls than online conversions one for some of our local advertisers.

Great information. Thanks for posting it. This is definitely a problem for local businesses where the solution is typically too complicated for them to take the time to deal with.

Of course I'm against the change. Any reduction of access to search terms and referrer data on Google Analytics is a blow to understanding where a small business (or any business) is getting its traffic. If Cutts is to be believed, this affects a small percentage of searches and apparently Google Webmaster tools still provide an aggregated list of the the top 1000 searches that drove traffic to your site. That said.... I'd rather they didn't do this... I'll have to see what the effect on my clients really is before I can say more than that.

Very interesting. I can totally see how Google might be trying to goad website owners that utliize referrer data for SEO purposes into investing more into paid search. The only thing that remains a mystery to me is how much value Google actually sees in referrer data. After all, searchers themselves are the most randomized variable in the art of SEO.

Kathleen,

I have been searching for an answer to a question I have concerning Google analytics and your article might be as close as I have come to finding an answer so I thought I would drop you a note and see if you can verify this for me. We develop mobile web sites and one of our clients wants to know how to track if people who visit the site are exiting via a click on phone number, this would be a good thing as they would be calling one of their franchises for more information or to make a reservation etc Do you know if this is possible with call metrics somehow. Thanks, Chris
