Thanks for the info. on the Barn Burner course. Based on how the track is, what is your goal for the race per lap? Can you really fly on the downhill or is it too rocky/loose to let it rip? What is the track like on the climbs? Thanks for anything you might want to share.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the great blog post. Glad you had a nice ride-- maybe we'll see you here this weekend?

I just wanted to mention that even though registration is not required, we ask that everyone sign in at the start of their ride, and sign out. That way we can make sure that no injured riders are left out in the desert all night with the coyotes. :)

Ride on!

If you park in the parking lot at 46th street and then take Javelina, you have to have some pretty strong legs. It is only 1.7 miles to Mormon Loop which I took next, but it took me over half an hour. It is almost all UPhill with loose scree and plenty of boulders which will make you get off your bike and walk up parts of it. Great excersize and very much worth it if you continue to Mormon Loop and any other trails.

I don’t know if I am just always kept in the dark about these things or if I have found a hidden jewel in Arizona biking. Sunrise Ski Park is offering all day lift tickets for mountain bikes for $15.00 per person. They are open on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. For someone who is not a huge fan of all day uphills but loves to hit hard downhills this place is amazing ! There were hardly any people there, which may change after this listing, so there was a lot of space to make your own pace and really get some good technical runs. The only drawback is the drive but for people in the east valley it’s just over two hours to Show Low. Maybe everyone has already ridden this place ages ago but just forgot to tell me !!!

This is a not a trail to take a beginner on. I would rate the trail intermediate to advanced. The hikers either stick their noses up at you, but it you are on a hairy part, they will stay to watch you crash. Don’t bring a new bike, and wear all the protection you have. The sketchiest parts are the first quarter of trail and the last quarter of the trail. The middle half is pretty much standard issue trail, very little walking here. There are some amazing views.

This trail is probably the most challenging one at South Mountain, there is not an easy way to do it, both clockwise and counterclockwise are about the same, but you have more chance to stay on your bike if you make it counterclockwise. Doing it this way you climb the entire south face of the north range of south mountain, once on the top, you move to the north face of the mountain where some walk a bike is mandatory, after returning to the south face the descent starts and there is no need for pedaling for the rest of the trail unless you need to ride back to the road intersection which adds a few miles to the trail and can be done by national trail, baja trail or the road.

The competative loop is perfect for intermediate weekend warriors to advanced riders wanting to get thier game on and have a blast bombing up and down the trail, has a nice bit in the biggining for a warm up and then all fun breaks loose! keep your eyes peeled open in the beginning for a small but fun jump to the right! Hard tail friendly, Dualie recommended! there are a few hair raising climbs but the grandaddy of all climbs is on the competative loop near the middle! It shure gets your heart rate up! Dont forget to checkout the view on top its beautifull!there are some muy fun obstacles to clear no sweat! Definately NOT a bigginer trail. 4/5*

This trail is awesome in any aspect, nice bit in the begginning for a warm up but the further you ride the rockier it gets! I rode on my hard tail and it jitters your arms and legs up on the downhill bits but its still fun. Near the end of the trail there is an eye alarming switch back accent into the mountain face, Just when you think it was about to end it has just begun! At the top of this ball dragging climb relax and enjoy the beautifull az sceinic land, at this point get yourself together an prepare for the flabbergasting descent to the parking lot(I advise to switch into high gear!) AS always happy trail riding :)

This is a pretty technical trail so don’t be fooled. This trail is best suited for intermediate to advanced mountain bikers. There are dips, ruts, some steep sections, loose rock, lots of water-bars, some cliff/ledge areas, and a steep drop off along the backside. Views from the trail are amazing.
