…..the truth is that society DOES discriminate against darker skinned people. We have a responsibility to teach our children that what the media says is not true. It starts at home. If we talk with our children and have candid truthful conversations about the color of our skin – they’re more likely to feel good about the way they look and more importantly, realize that they’re not the only ones secretly feeling the same way. Not only do we need to love the color of our skin but our hair too. I used to get relaxers for YEARS but decided almost 5 years ago that I would love the hair and skin I’m in. God gave me tightly curled (really tightly curled) hair and brow skin. Thank you God and we should all teach our children to love the hair and skin they’re in!

I think this is so sad. I am a black woman and grew up wishing I was white and had lighter skin and long, straight hair. The sad thing is that so many other little black girls have felt the same way. I thank God because after I got older, I began to see that being black was not ugly but being black was beautiful. There are so many different types of beauty. Dark skinned, light skinned, big, skinny, tall, thin, white, native american…..so many different nationalities and colors of skin. It’s all beautiful. I raised my daughter to look at herself and realize how beautiful God made her. He gave her tightly curled hair and brown skin. It’s all beautiful because that’s the way God made you!
