Bravo!

I so agree with you Sam!

Image and reputation are everything. Like shopping around for any product or service, choosing a school, in much the same way, is based on reputation, word of mouth, experience and product longevity. Would you buy a product from a manufacturer that was slowly going under and risk having your product warranty be nul and void. I think most of us would choose the tried and true product with a proven track record and great customer service and reputation.

Well, the EMSB(the manufacturer)has done poorly both in promoting and marketing its product, Its schools! Customer service, client satisfaction is at an all time low. Is it any wonder that parents are choosing other school boards or the private system.

It is time that the EMSB take a long hard look at itself and its governing practices. They must adopt new practices that will ensure long term solutions rather than short sighted and short term fixes. It is all too easy to blame laws for declining enrolment. It is all too easy to point fingers. But the truth of the matter is, many students eligible for the English system choose to go elsewhere simply because the EMSB just hasn't invested in marketing its product and cleaning up its image.

Is pulling the plug the only answer?

The take away message for us and those schools that were spared from this culling round, is how can we thrive under a huge Damocles Sword?

The EMSB should start acting vis à vis the individual schools like a franchisor would vis à vis its network of franchisees by promoting them and fostering their service offering.

Decrease in enrollment, is also a sign that the English community is exercising its right to choose where to send children to school. The EMSB is one of the choices. Should it continue acting the way it has so far, the "downsizing" will continue and more schools will close in three years time.

The EMSB (and council of commissioners) must rethink their approach and take a hard look at the damage they are causing to themselves and to their reputation. You are not going to attract clientele by telling everyone : "look, this school you're registering your kid in, might be on the chopping block is a couple of years". How are schools to achieve academic excellence and compete if they have to live under such burden? And how are parents to trust you with their most treasured asset?

Thanks Anthony.

If there is anything I have learned in the past 10 months, it's that it is doubly important to be involved in our children's education and school. If every parent gives a little of themselves to help nurture their school it will go a long way to preserving its longevity. I got involved in a state of panic and I plan to remain involved with a vision for the future.
