Hi Justin, it's a self-employed situation, so nothing to do with altered routes or pay raises. You're correct that time will tell, but people in the area where this happened have long memories. I guess what stuck in my mind was that nobody brought up the good things he'd done over the years.

Noel,

If the guy retired, perhaps he simply doesn't care about his reputation. It seems a little extreme of an action, and I assume something else is at play there. Did he get less envelopes at Christmas this year? Was his route altered? Was a pay raise voted down?

Also, only time will tell as to what his final reputation is. People might forget about a week without garbage pickup, especially if its to cold for the garbage to smell.

It's definitely a delicate situation when new higher ups start asking (or demanding) things without knowing the whole story. The longer I'm at my current position the more I feel like I'm giving history lessons to new hires. What feels worse is occasionally when I'm trying to explain something and I realize, as I'm doing so, that it's starting to sound like an excuse instead of a reason.

But I feel it's always good to verify someone understands the impact of what they're asking for - in your case the "how do we put the zeros back for the next guy" would have been the clincher for me. Maybe I would have proposed a db "enhancement" to have them query a view that did the trimming while leaving the original data untouched.

Thanks Claire! However, with a little imagination, you could think of a more exciting technology job. Perhaps something involving lasers. And spaceships. And sharks.
