Excellent article titled "Are You Paying Off Too Much." If you packaged hand analyses like these examples in a book, I would buy it. Very good explanations/analyses that make total sense.

One other thing about the first scenario (loos aggressive player calls down with a pair of Q's)...this is a doubly bad move for a normally aggressive player. If you want to play an aggressive game with a lot of weak hands, you have to know how to get out when you're beat.

Hero could have avoided this uncomfortable situation by making a resteal (i.e. check and raise) move on the flop or turn. When an opponent telegraphs weakness with wimpy bets like this, he's very vulnerable to a raise, and you can probably get a weak king (his most likely holding) to fold. A second reason for such a play is that you need to mix aggressive moves into your play anyway, and this is a good place to do it. But the most important reason to raise early in the hand is that it's a cheaper way to find out how much your opponent likes his hand than calling bigger and bigger bets till the end. If your opponent calls a check-raise and still keeps coming at you, you can fold your jacks with a clear conscience.

moneytize,

Yes, you're a large dog to win a tournament with $100 if there are $60k chips in play. But that doesn't mean that it's a losing proposition, because the prize of the tournament is considerably larger than the entry fee. So even though you fail to win the tournament more often than not even with 100 tries, you win much more than your entry when you do win.

And the example you gave where you're playing $100 vs. $59,900 heads up destroys the point of playing short stacked. You only get the advantage of a short stack in multiway pots.

yes but assuming that you have to go in all the time since your stack is so small relative to the blinds, you will be losing more often (though you are technically making more money per hand than your opponents for the reasons you stated).

the good thing about losing is that you get 100 rebuys at the tournament. so assuming that one of your opponents takes all the other opponents chips over time, and chances are you get stacked, you will be playing against him heads up $59,900 to $100. If I did my math right, that means you need to win 9 all-ins in a row to defeat your opponent. Assuming both opponents are of equal skill, and each all in on average we win 1/2 the time (to the ninth power), we would have odds of 512:1 to taking all our opponents chips. with only 100 tries, this would be losing.

Let me know if my math went wrong somewhere since I'm tired and could very easily have made a mistake :)
