I’ve had four encounters with what I prefer to call silhouette people.
The first three were in an old house in Jacksonville, FL where we lived for several years.
My wife and I had our bed in the middle of the bedroom. There was a night light on the house next door which backlit a window blind in the living room and was directly across from our bed. I awoke one night to see my wife – rather her silhouette standing in the doorway only about 6 or 7 feet away. As I watched “she” came toward the bed then turned to her left and went into deep shadow in the corner of the room. I asked, “What are you doing, Babe?” Her answer came from right beside me. She said, “I was asleep!” I grabbed my flashlight and shined it into the corner where our closet was but there was nothing there.
The next encounter, we had separated our two twin beds and put a night stand between them but still in the same room. Sometime later I awoke to see two children, a boy and a girl about three or four years old. They were jumping up and down on my wife’s bed while she slept but there was no movement of the bed. I watched them for 15 to 20 seconds and they just faded away.
The third and most frightening encounter – and I’m not sure why it was so frightening – came about a year later. I awoke to see a young girl, I would estimate in her early teens, came into my bedroom – not surprisingly, my wife had moved her bed to another room. The young girl looking silhouette knelt down in the middle of the room as if she was looking for something. I was leaning on one elbow looking straight at her when she turned and looked toward me. As soon as she saw me watching she jumped up and ran out of the bedroom and headed toward the dining room. I ran after her but she was nowhere to be found. When I got back to my room it sounded like my clock/radio had come on and there was a very loud masculine voice speaking a language I couldn’t understand. I checked the radio and it was off still the sound of the voice seemed to be coming from it. I left the room rather shaken by the experience but managed to go back to sleep rather quickly after it was over.
The last encounter was very recently and in a mobile home we’ve lived in for the past four years in Texas. I woke up one night and saw a short, stocky looking silhouette person standing at the far end of the hall. When I got out of bed I saw it take about two quick steps and it was out of view but looked like it ran toward the kitchen. Again, there was nothing there but I was certainly hoping I had left them behind in Florida.
I heard from one of my neighbors in Jacksonville, Florida that the lady who moved into that house committed suicide a few months later.

Actually the Ovilus PX is back in production and as a scientist the device does pique my interest. We have used devices ESD and ESAmp that convert EMF and RF waves into the audible tone that the fields truly sound like. These devices are tech equipment that are generally used to Id any contaminating signals when setting up routers, wireless networks and so forth. These are extremely effective at ‘EVP’ since you can literally hear the fields.

Now the Ovilus (a glorified Ouija board) has my attention because it just might work in a similar fashion. It would never be a replacement for any real tool but ‘communication-wise’ it would be invaluable if it works. I’m extremely hesitant to invest in such a device just because of its nature but it has me wondering ….what if?

My parents used to own this building and in it’s heyday it was a wonderful place to be – no eerie feeling at all. It makes me so sad to see it in the state it is, and hope one day someone will save it.

I have a simple explanation: mean girls like I was are pushing the damn thing! I probably traumatized many a slumber partier. Relax, people, ouija boards are not the devil. And, though we never use them in our investigations (nor any other toy), it is no different than going into a possibly haunted location and asking questions with a dvr. How come that’s ok?

Aanica, you are misinformed. The Ouija Board was invented by a man named Charles Kennard, the name Ouija was concocted by his successor, William Fuld (it literally means Yes, Yes). This is a matter of public record, as can be read about here.

The Ouija, having been invented in 1901 by Kennard for sale as a toy/novelty via his Toy and Game company ‘The Kennard Novelty Company’, has nothing to do with the Chinese, or with spiritual warfare (whatever that is to you). I’ll suggest that you should have a look at another of my previous articles pertaining to the history and reality of Demonology.

Au contrare, I most certainly did provide an explanation and gave you a site of a respected demonologist ( Adam Blai)who also states differently they are a form of communication that leaves the use open to spiritual attacks , I accept you do not believe but you are wrong…you simply think because you cant see it and therefore is nonexistent, you try to belittle the construction to cardboard and plastic as a way of promoting your own agenda of trying to make this sound as if its a child’s toy, its not, spirit boards date back to 1000 years ago, China I believe, you can do that leg work if you want. If you want to know about the people who are hurt by them, then may I suggest you study spiritual warfare and case by case… demonic haunting’s to be exact, most often the worst are inclusive of this at some point, choose any reputable demonologist and ask or study their published cases. My point is someone who is misinformed telling the public its ok to buy your child a Ouija board and let them play..well that is very irresponsible on your part. I will stand by that until my last breath, as will any real demonologist. You have the site I am at, ask our Demonologist, Ken Deel, well known and highly respected or choose your own, anyway you slice it your wrong to make this type of statement about it being safe.

What’s too bad is that you haven’t provided an explanation.

As I asked in the above article, explain yourself; you say the Ouija is dangerous…explain it. How? By what means? To whom?

The Ouija Board IS NOT DANGEROUS. It’s cardboard and plastic. Unless you plan on burying yourself under a couple thousand cases of them…there’s no harm that can come to you.

Again, as mentioned clearly in the article, there have been exactly two documented cases of so-called spirits harming a real person in the last 200 years. This is fact, a fact brought forward through research.

1) A man named John Bell was harmed in relation to the Bell Witch case in Tennessee in 1817

2) The Entity Case from California in the 1970’s

If Ouija boards are so dangerous, where are all the people who’ve been hurt by them?

None of this is important anyway, until someone can relay an experience with an acceptable amount of detail, that explains and lays out exactly what the danger is. Commentary from your position of self-imposed authority is about as valuable as the testimony of my dog, until you qualify it with supporting information.

Oh and next time, leave the ad hominem insults out, you don’t know me, nor do you know what lengths I’ve gone to in this pursuit.

Too bad, when people like you report the concept you have of how innocuous the Ouija board is as fact you do way more harm than you realize, This is untrue as anyone in the paranormal community who is involved in spiritual warfare will testify this is in fact an invitation to ANY passing spirit to use your body as a vessel to communicate (comes from the hand and arm being used by a spirit to move the planchette) I suggest a lot more research before you say without conviction the Ouija is harmless may I suggest a site by “Adam Blai” religious demonology from a Catholic viewpoint for clarification of this explanation. At least be responsible, even if your a skeptic there are many things you may not agree with or don’t understand but that does not mean they don’t exist, like the dangers with this spirit board.(Ouija)

I lived on Abraham St. (behind the hotel) and spent my youth in and out of there, selling chocolate bars for school (though the elders certainly didn’t buy many) or taking the ’shortcut’ up the stairs at the side of the building and through the back tiered gardens. It’s sad that this old gem sits vacant.
Now, if prostitution were legal it would make an amazing brothel…. 130 rooms and all. LOL
I’m only volunteering for the job of madam/bookkeeper. *teehee*

I Always Thought It Had Something To Do With Me Messing With The Occult. I Had “Cast” A Spell To See A Spirit. Later That Night, I Awake To See A Hooded Figure Standing In A Corner Watching Me. I Didn’t Feel Like It Wanted To Hurt Me, But I Was Terrified.

I Went Under My Covers. A Few Seconds Later I Decided To Look Again, And It Was Gone. I’ve Had No Other Encounters Since That Night. I Was Then 13, I Am Now 18

Science is about hard data, the problem with Paranormal research in general is equipment used. K2 meter: flash light, Radios, cell phones, random microwaves which are cities are flooded with set off EMF gauges and K2 meters. the only way to be able to use these devices with a clear reading of a spiritual entity is to take a clear reading of a spiritual entity. Paranormal researchers for years have assumed because there is an abundance of electromagnetic energy that a sum of this energy can be attributed to spiritual energy and now that is accepted by the community. Don’t get me wrong energy dose not just disappear it take on new form, that’s a fact and a reason why i am intrigued with paranormal research. Another device is the FLIR thermal cam, now this is a cool device, but again unreliable in the sense that you would have to now what you are looking for. I think the use of these tools are great, but i think every team needs to do extensive controlled testing to get an idea of how these devices will work in certain enforcements, and document each and every bug that these systems have before using them, keep heavy notes. As for the Ovilus…Well like the author said its a toy and has no scientific value. Paranormal TV shows are their for entertainment first, research second. If they had a real Paranormal research team to real studies, it would probably be very boring

This might be a bit late for you but, without a doubt, Robbie Thomas is claiming that he was involved in the Tori Stafford case (and many others). Consider his latest – his “Psychic Justice Tour” at http://www.robbiethomas.net – clearly claims (with a letter from her aunt) to have been involved in the Tori case. He has been using a local unsolved case to promote his event too – (I’m from Sarnia, Robbie’s hometown).

For the sake of the debate, I sincerely hope you do not find this in any way confrontational. I fully understood your angst with hunters that profess EVPs are evidence of ghosts. In that, you were very clear.

My debate with you was the general statement you made after that ‘EVP cannot be considered evidence….’. I think we do have a common ground on this matter that can be expanded with a simple word change. EVPs are not directly evidence of ghosts, but they do provide possible ‘clues’. Clues that maybe will provide us with more information about both types of paranormal activity (EVP and ghosts). Agreed?

@psiEngergos – I suppose we’re actually in agreement, in an oddly confrontational way, as what you have just laid out is more or less what I’ve been saying all along. With the exception that you seem to think I have discounted the possibility that EVP is connected to ghosts. I have not. There may be a connection, though this possibility is no more likely than any other at this point, it also is no more likely that EVP is connected to any other variation of the idea behind ghosts, whether that be demons, aliens, inter-dimensional beings or fairyfolk.

What I have said, with painful repetition (here and elsewhere), is that EVP is not evidence of ghosts, which far too many people refuse to concede. Read no more into it than what I have laid out.

If it wasn’t clear that this article and this idea are a call to the huge number of “ghost hunters” who DO tout that EVP is evidence of ghosts (or demons, or aliens, or inter-dimensional beings ad nausea) to stop fooling around and start actually learning something, then I’m really at a loss to explain this misunderstanding.

I appreciate you taking the time to read and provide your input.

Assumptions? What assumptions? I merely posed a possibility and wished you luck! The seque way was in the section just prior to the question (maybe it is you who are assuming! :-D).

(Moving on) Not knowing what ghosts are, we can’t very well say they ’cause’ (or not) anything with certainty. And with regards to haunted or not haunted, it is a antiquated term that relies on the belief that a ghost is the spirit (deceased human, inhuman, other) of some sort that resides in a particular location. Unfortunately, again, since we don’t know what a ghost is, haunted or nor haunted has a very empty meaning (In fact I tend to chuckle whenever I hear it referenced in paranormal reality shows). With this in mind, whether or not you capture an EVP in a location believed in the classic sense to be haunted in irrelevant. Not knowing what ghosts are, we have no definitive way of saying they reside in a place or not, so you have no definitive way of labeling a location as haunted (or not).

What we do know from our observations is that there seem to places where paranormal activity (all sorts) are more prevalent than others. I have been places where no EVPs are captured and other activity is observed and vice-versa.

I do not hypothesis that EVPs are directly caused by ghosts. What I am saying is that until we know more about the nature, form and (possible) cause for paranormal activity associated with ghosts, we cannot with any real authority discount the possibility either. My debate with you is not over whether or not EVPs are evidence of ghosts, because they are not directly, but if the premise was used with just about any other form of observed paranormal activity it would be equally true given what we know about ghosts in general. So I fail to see the point in this endeavor. If the point is to increase the readers awareness that EVP are a phenomena worthy of their own study, you’ve convinced me.

One last note pertaining to natural or man made causes; as investigators, we have to analyze all data collected and scrutinize it for the same possibilities, why are EVPs so different in this regard that they should be treated any differently than say evidence of electromagnetic effects or of psychokinetic (things moving on their own, being touched)?
