I am pleased to say I am one of those "baby boomers" and every day I just hope I have prepared adequately so my finances will last as long as I last. We, all of us, are facing the high cost of living, especially medical care, food and everyday expenses. The only differences between the boomers and the younger generations is that we are at the end of our earning years. I certainly hope our younger generations learn from us and begin to prepare for their golden years because it looks like they may have to do it all on their own.

There are so many important decisions to be made as
our loved ones grow older or become unable to make decisions on their own. I feel it is important include the person in the desisions as much as possible. With my mother I always tried to come up with two options at a time which I knew would both be acceptable if chosen. I then visited with her about them and let her make her choice. I realize this cannot always be done but when possible I found she always felt good about the change because she chose for herself and no one MADE her make the change that was needed.

I like your blog, Becky. I'm looking forward to the Brokaw documentary on CNBC tomorrow, but am going to be pissed off if they include people my age (born 1961) as Boomers instead of including us with our real generation: Generation Jones (born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and Xers).

Your words are lovely, but I must add a comment about my most loving father who cared for my Mom for ten years. She had Alzheimer's disease for that long and never once did he envision his life without her. When she wouldn't get out of her chair, he asked her to dance. When he wanted to go to Florida to experience the beach, he designed and had his son-in-law build a "lift" to get her in his small airplane. Nothing was impossible with this man and he was going to experience it with his bride, as he referred to my Mom. Two days before he died, he showed me the sailboat he was planning to purchase and how he would "adapt" it for his bride to accompany him on his ride. Yes, it was exhausting.... the pages of the 38 Hour Day were dog earred. But we also saw the enduring love in his caregiving which made an everlasing impression on his family and friends. I don't know if his caregiving was different because he was a man. I can only hope that I will have the same joy in my heart to match his, so that I can mirror his self-less giving.
Thank you.

This will be a great resource for the grown children of some of the elder owners in the condominium I manage. When they begin having doubts about their parent's ability to drive anymore, or take care of themselves properly, or live alone any longer, they often come into my office and ask what I have noticed, etc. It will be great to have a copy of a recent newsletter or particular topic that I can print out for them for some possible direction or consideration - a nice balance to just confirming a decline of some sort that they are recognizing. Very good luck to you; the timing is certainly right with all of us baby bomers coming on line!
