The Big Ugly Dishes you describe are C Band satellite dishes. the smaller dishes are Ku band. Yes, back in the day, you could receive network feeds unencoded with a C band dish. The good news is that there is still free programming available for free on both C band and Ku band. Much of it is foreign language, educational, regional, or religious programming. There is also a lot of radio broadcasting available. There are about 20 satellites visible from North America, that generally have about 24 active transponders, "visible" from North America. You can get a good idea of what kind of programming is available at ftalist.com. Free To Air won't replace cable or satellite tv for most people, but makes a fun hobby that you can get into with minimal expense. On the other hand it may provide exactly the programming that suits your needs.

i've seen people (with artistic ability) paint things on them and hang them up or sell them. otherwise you could scrap it and get maybe $ 5.
Death ray, sundial, idol to worship, frying pan, skillet, wok, siren amplifier, spotlight diffuser, party bowl(chips and salsa, etc), sled, extraterrestrial radio phone, convert to powerful radio telescope, solar collector(mount solar cells), polish it and add chrome finish for a truck mirror, mount a sensitive mic for a parabolic mic, the list gos on.

They can, because the software is a scam. All they do is aggregate channels that are freely available to anyone and throw some kind of GUI, easy to browse front end on it. You get public access programming from Malaysia and former Soviet countries, stuff like that. You don't get what most people consider to be the good channels, which have to be paid for.
