Take your camera off automatic and use your light meter and dont be afraid to underexpose the photo by a half or a full stop. For portraits I usually sharpen certain features, usually eyes, hair, and sometimes, jewelry. That's why people love to live here, you can swim at the beach and go skiing in the same day.
