Peter brings up a great point- "you dont have to spin things if the truth works."Unfortunately, in the above cases, the truth didn't work. They have not been true to their preachings.. a difficult thing to admit. In contrast, Johnson & Johnson saw no need for a spin. They told the truth and got to work. The real stuff is that J&J never veered away from their values, not before the incident and certainly not after.

I'm reading the third book in Steig Larsson's trilogy, "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest". There's a scene in the book where a new leader has a two month overlap with with the outgoing leader. Unfortunately something happens that makes it imperative for the new leader to take charge must earlier than expected. (You'll have to read the book to find out why. It's a great read.)

The lesson is to milk every moment of an overlap for all it's worth - while being ready to step up and take charge at a moment's notice. Always have a plan B.

Mitigating the organization, role, and personal risks before accepting a job is ideal. Sometimes, you're going to have to accept a job even if those risks are present. In those cases, it's even more important to do a deep dive to understand the risk.

Think about jumping off a cliff into a pool of water. It's a good idea to figure out if there are rocks hidden under the water. If there are, you may not want to jump. But, if you have to jump, it's even more important to understand the rocks in detail so you can avoid hitting them on the way down.
