Serena,
I'm taking a great course on HIV and Theology and referencing this article for the class. You have some great points. There are definitely a lot of troubling aspects to the vaccine story, unfortunately.

I also have alot of Sallie Mae loans both federal and private. Is it better to consolidate or to pay each loan accordingly? Your thoughts? Thanks.

I really like your plan except for one thing. In my opinion (take it for what it is worth) I do not believe you should stop your retirement savings. This is one of THE most important things that you should never skimp on. First, once you are in the habit of savings for retirement you should keep it up, inertia is always against you. Second, it is tax free or deferred, you won't get that for your debt (car/home) payments, emergency funds, investments, etc... Third, in VERY dire situations you can always cash it out. Therefore, I like your overall plan but PLEASE do not short change your retirement!

I subscribe to the New Yorker, The Atlantic and G&L Review and White Crane. That's about all I can afford but I find them all necessary in different ways. The New Yorker and The Atlantic gives me information I can't find anywhere and White Crane's improved over the years and still gives me access to Gay voices I hear rarely. And I like to support little independents like that.

Hi Holly,

My library allows magazine checkouts as well but only on the older year long bound versions and they are thinking of doing away with them and going strictly to scanned computer access to save space.

I do make sure I pass on those I've bought to others...my version of recycling them.

Sometimes I'll take a big pile of them over to one of the Assisted Living/Nursing Homes nearby..they really seem to appreciate any sort of reading material.

Turns out our local library has magazines that you can borrow. Instead of paying for subscriptions, I just check out a few on our weekly library trip. The only catch is that they recently changed the borrowing policy and I now need to manage the incurring of late fees better. I do, however, consider the $2-$5/month part of my support to local libraries.

The lazy man's recipe: poke many holes in it with a fork, and microwave it for 9 minutes on a plate. (Or longer if not softened)

Cut it in half. scoop out the seeds, then add butter, salt, and pepper to your ready made meal. It even makes it's own bowl!

We are "pickers" too. End of college semesters are the best times for looking around-- I get a look at our neighborhood and campus on the way home on the bus and send hubby out with the van when I get home.

Even if you don't necessarily need the items you pick, cleaning up and selling them at garage sales can mean $$ in the pocket!

We are not germophobic about what we pick. We have even picked complete sets of dishes, dirty with food, that college students were to lazy to wash and pack to take on to their next place. A quick run through the dishwasher on the hottest setting and we had a full set of dishes to sell.

Years ago my Dad was very ill and out of work my Mom worked at the local 5&10 store so you know money was tight.Well along comes Christmas and things are getting worse so one day they say they want to speak with me and tell me because things were really tight (this I already knew)they could only afford presents for my younger sister&brother cause they still believed in Santa I knew hard times were taking there toll and said to them don't worry it's okay I love you. Well when they told some very close friends about this conversation because they were so proud of me their friends went out without my parents knowing and purchased me more presents than I knew what to do with. I am still thankful anyway what I am getting at is maybe you should just talk to your daughter about the situation you might be surprised.
