Nathan,

Interesting ideas - in the past, do you think more Americans depended on company pensions for retirement than they do now? If so, how would this shift our thinking and our habits?

Carly,

Very interesting points. How do most people learn about financial decision making?

Matt,

Do you think American societal values towards money, wealth and spending have changed in the last generation? Since the latest recession?

Casey,

Terrific ideas. What about those who are struggling to get basic needs met? How would you address these issues?

Allie,

Great thoughts. I'm wondering if you think the class would be mandatory and who would teach it? Would it be practically oriented or more theoretical?

I believe that offering a class about managing personal finances would not only attract students, but it would also help to guide and inform them. Luckily, some students have great role models in their families. However, there are tons of students who have to immediately pay rent as soon as they turn eighteen, students that are kicked out of their homes that they were raised in, students who have to learn to pay for college on their own and students who need to find a job to help support their families. There are numerous reasons of why students would need money. Having a class to help demonstrate saving techniques, comparing needs and wants, and creating greater skills to research information will greatly help students not only during their high school career, but also throughout their future.

Question 1:
Economic security is when you have money to pay the bills and get your basic needs. This means you will not be living paycheck to paycheck. You also should have a cushion of money for emergencies, so if something comes up that you need money for right away, you won't have to worry. Saving money is a good way to attain ecomomic security. For example, people who want to travel during their retirement need to save money when they are working and parents need to save when their children are young in order to have enough money to send their kids to college. You could also be saving for any luxuries, such as a nice car or a vacation.

Q4
I believe that the best way for us to encourage economic security is to foster an environment where preparedness and responsibility is encouraged. A major problem that we have in our American system today is that people have a tendency to live beyond their means. This is by product of material value and the example our politicians set. This overspending consequently encourages the business cycle, which is bad for economic security

Q3) I believe that high schools should offer a course to help inform students about managing their personal finances. I have personally come from a household with poor financial management and the stress it puts on our family gets unbearable at times. However, living under those circumstances has taught me to desire to be financially stable, but I am unable to learn the tools and skills necessary from my own family. This is why I believe that courses should be offered at high schools where students may choose to learn more about money management in order to prepare themselves for a more successful future.

I do feel like there is a poor sense of economic security in our nation. We live in a consumer-oriented culture where excessive-spending is glorified in Hollywood and in the media. High schoolers need to understand consumer economics in order to not become part of the 70% of Americans (according to the Federal Reserve) who live on their monthly income with no economic security. Citizens should save 3-6 months bills' worth of income, so if there is an emergency or citizens become unemployed, they can afford to maintain their standard of living long enough to search for a new job. Squandering financial assets creates debt, unnecessary stress, and burdens upon the next generation of Americans. Fiscal responsibility should be valued in business schools via business ethics classes, high schools, and most importantly, every American family's home.
